As an update to my previous post, here is more information.

We purchased a Lennar home in the Folsom Ranch community in Folsom, CA, in July of 2019. The house was outfit by Amazon as a “smart home” that included the Ruckus ICX7150-C12 switch and two R510 Access Points. In addition to this, we contracted with AT&T for 1GB Internet service delivered over fiber to a BGW210-700 Internet router. 

The switch is connected directly to the router over Ethernet, and the switch is connected to the two WAP’s, also via Ethernet. The download speed at the router is 884 Mbps. The download speed at the Ruckus Switch is 831 Mbps.

Since Lennar failed to wire the house with Ethernet, other than the wiring from the Switch to the WAP’s, all other traffic is delivered via the two WAP’s – one on the first floor ceiling and one on the second floor ceiling.

Wireless signals within the house measure as high as 425 Mbps and as low as 250 Mbps, depending on line of site and location from either of the two WAP’s. The office on the first floor which contains the two high-end laptops, which happens to be down the hall and in another room, measures one of the lowest speeds at 261 Mbps.

With the advent of smart-tv’s and streaming devices, download speed in other areas of the house, like the family room, loft, etc., is as important as the office location.

The basic question is: what is the fastest speed that the R510 is capable of, and is there any alternative for reaching places that out of the line of site? Are there alternatives to the R510 that could produce higher WiFi signals throughout the house?

I found an online manual for the ICX-7150 Switch and typed in the following commands in a Telnet session:

device> enable

device# configure terminal

device(config)# crypto-ssl certificate generate

device(config)# username super password pass

device(config)# aaa authentication login default local

device(config)# aaa authentication web-server default local

device(config # no telnet server

 

Unfortunately, this seems to have disabled my Telnet access. However, I am now able to login via a Web browser and have complete access into the switch. I am not sure if my previous reply got through, but I was able to upgrade the switch and confirmed it is now at 08.0.95gT211. Unfortunately, I have not seen any drastic improvement in the WiFi speeds.

Thank you for the response.

From the previous post, I understand that you were able to login to the GUI of the Switch through web browser using the Switch Ip address.

May i please know if you are able to login to the CLI of the Switch using the SSH option after resetting the credentials?

Please login to the CLI of the Switch using the SSH option, if you are facing issues accessing CLI through SSH, you can enable Telnet.

As you are able to access GUI of the Switch, I would request you to please enable Telnet through the browser by following the below screenshots:

Once you have enabled Telnet through the web browser, I request you to please login to the CLI of the Switch using the Telnet option.

I must confess, however, that the basic premise for all the work and effort here have not been satisfactorily addressed, which is the speed of WiFi within the house in ALL locations. What I'd like to know is what is the maximum speed that the Ruckus system, i.e., (1) ICX7150 Switch and (2) R510 Access Points, capable of delivering, given 1 GB Internet service over fiber to the house?

If this system cannot deliver close to 1 GB service over Wi-Fi, is there a Ruckus system that can deliver close to that speed? If so, what are the prospects to upgrade?

We are glad to know that the Telnet access is enabled on the Switch.

Also, we understand that you are still having slower speed issues while accessing through Ruckus devices.

Maximum Speed from RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch:

  • Gigabit Ethernet Ports: The 12 standard Ethernet ports support speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Maximum Speed Capacity for RUCKUS R510 Access Points:

  • 2.4 GHz Band: The R510 can achieve a maximum theoretical speed of 400 Mbps using 802.11ac with 2x2 MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output).
  • 5 GHz Band: The R510 can achieve a maximum theoretical speed of 1.3 Gbps using 802.11ac with 2x2 MIMO.

 However, from the Wi-Fi Access Points, this maximum speed cannot be achieved due to some reasons:

Such as

-Ethernet cable quality used to connect the Access Points from the Switch

- It's also worth noting that many electronic devices and appliances, such as microwaves, baby monitors, security cameras, garage door openers, and phones, operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency, which can contribute to interference that reduces the speed.

- Distance between the Access Points and device through which the Internet is accessed.  Etc.,
