Migrating from ZD3000 to ZD 5000

We are currently running on a redundant pair of ZD3000 controllers. The replacement ZD 5000s have been ordered. To upgrade do I just get the ZD5000s on the same SW release as the 3000s and restore a backup from the ZD3000s.

Hi Andrew,

You can upload the configuration from a ZD3k to a ZD5K but not the reverse. Make sure the ZD5K is running the same version of firmware as running on the ZD3K when the configuration was backed up. You can easily upgrade the 5K after importing the configuration. The new "Smart Redundancy" feature will only work with identical Zone Directors running the same level of firmware (9.0 and up) and with the same number of AP licenses. You can use the old "secondary Zone Director" IP setting on Access Points to seek out a second Zone Director if the primary does not respond. This form of AD hoc redundancy works as the Access Points seek out and request to join the Zone Director. But any users creation, DPSK's will not automatically get updated in the "back up" ZD, and the AP will reboot after connecting to and getting provisioned by the new Zone Director, dropping customer traffic. If using this AD Hoc redundancy feature make sure both ZD's are running the same level of code, otherwise the AP will get upgraded/downgraded if they change ZD's, and can cause long delays and AP's that flap between Zone Directors.

One thing, I am running 9.4.3.0.12 on the 3K but it does not appear to be avaiable to download anymore. Can I get it from support?

Additional to above explanation.

The following step by step procedure will explain the process for restoring the back-up file across the Zonedirectors configured in the smart redundancy mode and its detailed process.

1. Log in to the active ZoneDirector or the shared Management Interface.
2. Go to Administer > Back up.
3. Under the Restore Configuration section, click Browse. The Browse dialog box appears.
4. Browse to the location where you saved the initial backup file, and then click Open.
5. When the backup file name appears in the text field, the Browse button becomes the Restore button.
6. Click Restore. The backup ZoneDirector is restored first.
7. When the Stand-by/Secondary ZoneDirector upgrade is complete, the backup ZoneDirector reboots and becomes active (begins accepting AP requests), while the original active ZoneDirector enters Stand-by state and begins its own restoration process.
8. All APs are now associated to the Stand-by ZoneDirector (which is now the active ZoneDirector) will update their respective configuration.

If you want to use same IP for the replacement ZD's then make sure you remove the old pair from the network to avoid IP conflict.

Fist establish SR between new pair then remove the old pair from the network and then connect the new pair.

You can take a backup from ZD 3K running with 9.4.3.0.12 and upload to ZD 5K running with 9.4.3.0.12 or above.
