AP only for expended Wi-Fi coverage

Chief187

I only wanted to use the APs in my home to widen my existing Wi-Fi net from my modem/router. My internet provider advised that having the ruckus network named as the same as my modem/router existing network is not compatible and causes issues. Is this correct?.

Thanks. I’ve given up and pulled the plug

Hello,

If the Ruckus AP is also configured to broadcast the same wifi name (SSID) and the same password/PSK (assuming you are using regular password based encryption) as your ISP router, you can avoid having multiple wifi names (SSIDs) seen around your home. Also, with the same network name and password, devices should be able to connect to either the ISP router or the Ruckus AP based on the quality of signal received from them.
But if you want to know with certainty whether your device has connected to the ISP router or to the Ruckus AP, then it would be good idea to configure a different wifi name (SSID) on the Ruckus AP.

Hi @Chief187

Greetings!!!

Thank you for reaching out to the RUCKUS Lennar Home Community.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issues you are experiencing with your RUCKUS setup.

Based on the information provided, it appears that you are encountering intermittent internet connectivity.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and are committed to assisting you promptly.

Please note that RUCKUS does not provide a modem or router. However, you can extend Wi-Fi coverage using the RUCKUS Access Points mounted on the ceiling, as they function as extenders.

The RUCKUS setup includes the RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch and Access Points, which should be connected to your ISP’s (Internet Service Provider’s) router.

For detailed device information and configuration guidelines, please refer to the following RUCKUS Lennar Knowledge Base self-help article:

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you again for your patience.

I understand that. And I already have a modem/router hooked up, and I know how to set up an access point. My question is can I or should I name the AP the same as my existing Wi-Fi network.

Hi @Chief187

Thank you for your response and for sharing the information.

You can create an SSID/Wi-Fi network with any name you prefer. Just be sure that you won't get confused between these same Wi-Fi network names.

For step-by-step guidance, please refer to the following RUCKUS Lennar Knowledge Base self-help article on creating a new Unleashed AP Wi-Fi network:

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
