I am able to get to the login but all the username/passwords listed in this community do not work. how can I either reset and start over or do anything with it?

If you have the backup config of switch. Try factory reset the switch then try with factory default username : super and password : sp-admin.
Also you can try password recovery before proceeding with factory reset the switch by referring below link

yeah, I'm probably just not going to use this and if decide to put WAP in my house I'll just go new. This is too difficult. I am not the original owner so I don't have any of this stuff. and even the serial connection...is it truly serial where i need a serial cable? Because I certainly don't have that. And ruckus doesn't want to support it. soooo....meh...may just get wifi extenders through xfinity

You can just use a regular USB type C cable just like most android phones. There is nothing special about the required cable. Drivers are here if needed:
