ICX7150 - configure a vlan to get dhcp from specific dhcp server

DrBobGulick

Very new to this so any guidance and grace is appreciated.

Mixed environment with different makes / models of switches leading back to server rack where we have our WIndows DHCP servers. Normally each building has a default VLAN where untagged VLAN for the 'normal' ports on the switch for the building get to DHCP and get a building VLAN IP Address.

We now are installing a clock/pa system within the building and it needs its own separate VLAN. The clock/pa VLAN is on all of the switches between DHCP server and the ICX7150 in question.

From the ICX7150 CLI I can ping the DHCP server, I can ping the clock/pa gateway IP address, we have the ports being used for the clock/pa devices set to the clock/pa vlan as untagged and no tagged vlans. The clock/pa devices are configured for dhcp. When the devices are plugged into the port they do not get a DHCP assigned IP address.

What am I missing here?

Hi DrBobGulick.

Thank you for using our products.

There are multiple answers to your question:

1) If the ICX7150 is running layer 2 code (SPSxxxxxx) and you have only one VLAN on it, then the ICX will have no participation on the DHCP and you should look into the next switch or router, to find out the cause of the problem.

2) If the ICX7150 is running layer 2 code (SPSxxxxxx) and you have multiple VLANs, you need to tag the uplink port to the next switch or router on the clock/pa VLAN so the ICX will forward the DHCP request received on that VLAN to the next device.

3) If the ICX7150 is running layer 3 code (SPRxxxxxx), and a routing protocol is configured, you can configure an IP helper to redirect the DHCP request to the DHCP server (https://docs.commscope.com/bundle/fastiron-09010-dhcpguide/page/GUID-643304A1-0198-432A-A36B-524D141...). If no routing protocol is configured, then you need to make sure the static routes allow the ICX to reach the DHCP server and get a response back from it.

Adding to the above, considering that there are multiple vendors involved.
Hope the diagram helps.
