Questions about Dedicated Master and Preferred Master

=========================================================================

1) Dedicated Master
- Enable Dedicated Master

2) Preferred Master
-Disable WLAN service on Master AP
=>If the Unleashed Network contains 3 or more connected APs, the Master AP will not provide Wi-Fi service

=========================================================================

Q1. Are the operation methods the same when setting up 1) and 2)?

Q2. What are the differences between the two operation methods, if any?

Q3. After setting up 2), the Master AP Wi-Fi Server does not function with three or more APs.

Is the same thing if the existing Master dies and the Secondary becomes the Master?

Q4. Can the Preferred Master function be used with all APs, regardless of AP type?

Thank you.

Hi Hyshin,

Thank you for posting your query!

I understand that you would like to know the differences between Dedicated Master and Preferred Master modes in Ruckus Unleashed.

1. Dedicated Master

The AP functions only as a controller and does not provide Wi-Fi service.

If it goes down, a standby master can take over — this requires manual configuration.

It supports advanced management features such as VLANs and AP approvals.

Supported only on specific models like R750, R770, and R850.

This mode effectively works as a dedicated controller, increasing overall management capacity.

2. Preferred Master

A normal AP that has priority to become the Master if the current one fails.

When it’s not acting as Master, it continues to serve Wi-Fi clients.

If the Master fails, the system automatically promotes the Preferred Master (and Secondary, if configured).

Easy to configure via the web UI, and does not require manual intervention.

The Preferred Master (Wi-Fi 6) setup can support up to 50 APs and 1,024 clients.

>The Dedicated Master offers higher management capacity and is ideal for networks prioritizing stability and control.

>The Preferred Master provides automatic and flexible redundancy, making it simpler to maintain with minimal manual effort.
