Re: Outdoor Extender to work with Ruckus R510

I have received an E510 to extend the WIFI coverage outdoors. In addition to a power supply, the documentation indicates that I must also purchase an antenna module. Is this absolutely necessary or could I just add short antennas to the 2 antenna ports? It seems that the antenna module may be needed only if adding cables to run to a more remotely located antenna. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi @MizzouWoman

Greetings!!!
Thank you for contacting RUCKUS Community Support forums.

The Ruckus E510 is a bit unique compared to typical APs, so the confusion is totally understandable.

How the E510 is designed

The E510 uses a split architecture:

  • RF (radio) module - the main AP unit
  • Antenna module - separate external unit

This design is intentional to allow flexible deployment (Ex: hiding the AP inside enclosures while placing the antenna externally for better signal propagation).

Do you need the antenna module?

Yes, in most cases, it is required.

  • The E510 is not designed to operate with simple “short antennas” directly attached like traditional APs.
  • It relies on the dedicated BeamFlex+ antenna module to function properly and deliver expected RF performance.
  • The antenna module is essentially part of the system, not just an optional accessory.

What about the antenna ports?

Those ports are used to:

  • Connect the official E510 antenna module via cables
  • Allow flexible placement (Ex: antenna mounted externally, AP hidden inside enclosure)

They are not intended for generic dipole antennas, and using such antennas:

  • May result in poor performance
  • May not provide proper coverage patterns
  • Could lead to non-optimal or unsupported deployment

When is the antenna module especially needed?

  • Outdoor deployments (most use cases)
  • Installations inside metal enclosures / kiosks
  • Situations where coverage direction matters

We can simply say:

  • Antenna module = part of the intended design
  • Generic short antennas = not recommended / not supported

If you have the E510 AP without the antenna module, best next step is to procure the official antenna module (902-2101-xxxx) to ensure proper operation.

If you run into any issues during setup or need help validating the deployment, I would recommend raising a support ticket with RUCKUS Tech Support for deeper assistance using link below:

Hope that helps.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
