Using the 4x 10Gb interfaces on 6450-48p?

Hi everyone, 

I purchased on "old" 6450-48P for my home lab, but still a bit in doubt on the license and port capabilities.. 

My boot screen shows 2 of the SFP ports are disabled due to the lack of a license, but it doesn't state if the other 2 are 10Gb or 1Gb ports..  and then there is the Unit 2 that states a 4 port 40G module.. 

if it requires licenses, how would I be able to get one or a demo one.. ?

Delete the startup config, reboot and you should then have access to all your 10G ports. However you will need to manually set your unlicensed 10G ports to 1G in order to use them.

There should be no need to delete the startup-config and reload to run 10G.  Just remove the speed-duplex 1000-full or whatever it says on the interfaces... via a "no speed-duplex xxxxxxxx"

Once the licence is installed, it would be expected to simply work.  Otherwise, trying to remove that option will cause an error presumably telling you that you need a licence.

Another, even simpler option quite honestly is to simply reset the interface to its default.

While in a Cisco environment that would be something like switch# default interface ten 1/1/1

In the ICX world, it is really much more intuitive....

switch# no interface e 1/3/1



You may have recognized in blank configurations, the vast majority of interfaces are simply not shown in the configuration of ICX devices - this is when they have their default configuration.  The interface is still available for configuration should you choose to tweak its settings.


i.e. you can still see it via "show int brief"
