Data Retransmission in Brocade ICX6450-48 2 stacked switch

Hi All,

I have connected few PCs with 2xICX6450-48 switch in local envrionment.

Assigned private IPs(like 169.254.3.1-50) in my PCs. Now i see retransmission in TCP connections of many PCs, i checked switch for any problem but could not see any errors in either ethernet interfaces or stack interfaces.

netstat O/P snippet on PC 169.254.3.31:
2018-10-02 03:08:10 tcp 0 38093 169.254.3.31:53098 169.254.3.32:13602 ESTABLISHED 601 1280802 4486/xxx on (0.28/1/0)
2018-10-02 03:38:10 tcp 0 996 169.254.3.31:46332 169.254.3.49:12602 ESTABLISHED 601 1689988 5919/xxx on (0.34/1/0)

Switch stacking settings:
all stack ports are 10G.
I have configured stack ports on both switch units in trunk mode (Trunk1: [1/2/1, 1/2/2],
Trunk2: [1/2/3, 1/2/4]).

Firmware:
I am using firmware 08.0.30

When i checked command output "show stack rel-ipc", i see a field "Data retransmits done: ". Is it says switch is doing restarnsmission for packets.
How to minimize it.

Output of few diagnostic command:

It seems you are using APIPA range on the PCs. When the DHCP process fails, Windows automatically assigns an IP address from the private range, which is 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254.

APIPA addresses do not fall into any of the private IP address ranges defined by the Internet Protocol standard and are restricted for use on local networks only. Like private IP addresses, ping tests or any other connection requests from the internet and other outside networks cannot be made to APIPA devices directly. Please use standard IP address ranges and test.

Secondly, could you clarify what are the applications running on the PCs using TCP ports ?

Hi Panangat,

Thanks for your reply.

I am not using APIPA, DHCP configuration is used.

The whole setup is in a local network.

I am using some backup application on those tcp ports.

Moreover, stack statistics, and Ethernet port statistics are taken after running "clear statistics" command, so they are showing current statistics, may not show actual figures from start.

Can you suggest any problem in switch, looking at "show stack rel-ipc" output, particularly below field,

Data retransmits done:      2511094

Is switch responsible for retransmissions?

It's a bad idea to use the APIPA address range for anything you rely on.  If you're handing that out through DHCP, I would recommend changing that.

You're showing statistics for interprocessor communication.  That has nothing to do with actual data transferring through the switch.  Seeing data retransmits under the IPC stats is normal.  Based on what you've shown, I see no issues.

You are running version 8.0.30 on that switch (circa 2015).  I would update them to a newer version.  8.0.30sa is the newest.  I've been running 8.0.30r on all my 6450s (150+) with no problems.

I was going to say the same thing about avoiding APIPA Ip's.  If you want something private please use something (non-overlapping) within:

192.168.0.0/16
172.16.0.0/12
10.0.0.0/8

As for stacking, it has had numerous bug fixes in the 08030 family codebase.  Specifically, I can assure you to avoid "N" and "P" like the plague.

That said, "MB" was great, "Q" was just fine; we never tried "R," but the poster above is happy with it.  Regardless, are just now deploying "SA" - which is the latest and has been trouble-free for us though we have it on only on a handful of our switches at this time.  Though the sample set is in production on 6430's and 6450's as well as 6610's in both the Layer-2 and the Layer-3 flavors.  Thus far, it's fine.

That said, it will be a while (week or two) before my entire environment runs all SA on any device running the 08030 ICX family codebase.

I repeat that I would NOT run the very first build of 08030 - especially in a stack environment!

____________

If you have any ICX7xxx series, you need at least 08061 to properly support stacking - at least on the 7150's, but let me assure you 08071 builds are of better quality being they fixed a certain NTP bug.  Regardless, either is stable in a stack environment and certainly won't have traffic problems.  We are just now testing the 08080 branch....  Intend to roll that out before Halloween.  Have over 500+ Ruckus/Brocade devices in our environment.
