The two switch ports on any Zone Director are switch ports. If you would like to load balance or automatically switch over from a failed line you will need a router.
ZoneDirector version 9.10.2.0.29 is the last version for the ZD1100. The R310 will need ZoneDirector version 9.13.0.0.232, which requires at least a ZD1200. In short, the R310 will not operate on a ZD1100.
