I have a question regarding the smart-redundancy feature of ZD-1200.

Hello.

The customer is currently using 2 ZD-1200s with smart-redundancy configured, but one of the active mode devices is experiencing a problem, so one of the standby devices is operating in active mode.

The device with the problem is operating in active mode, but I want to install a new ZD-1200 to use temporarily until the new RMA device arrives and use it in standby mode.

Below is my question written with a random IP instead of the actual IP.

The customer is currently using the standby device with the IP of 10.10.10.11 in active mode. The IP of the device in active mode that was previously in use was 10.10.10.10.

The customer wants to use the 10.10.10.11 that is currently in active mode in active mode and 10.10.10.10 in standby mode.

Current smart-redundancy settings for 10.10.10.11 are as follows:
enable smart redundancy (O)
local Device IP Address : 10.10.10.11 = Active
Peer Device IP Address : 10.10.10.10 = Disconnected

The customer is concerned that when installing a new replacement device 10.10.10.10, 10.10.11 will switch back to standby mode.

The new replacement device 10.10.10.10 has a pre-configured access IP.

Even if I connect the 10.10.10.10 device to the existing network configuration, will the 10.10.10.11 device switch back to standby mode?

Please answer.

Thank you.

Hi @msk,

In the ZD Smart Redundancy, once the device becomes Active or Standby, it will only switch the role if the Active node goes down or manual role switch from the GUI.

So in your case once the 10.10.10.11 becomes Active, even if you connect the 10.10.10.10 back, it will connect as Standby and 10.10.10.11 will not become Standby unless we switch manually from GUI or do a reboot on 10.10.10.11.

I would recommend to do as below:
Ensure any license is transferred from faulty ZD to replacement ZD.
Once the new replacement comes in, configure the IP address 10.10.10.10 and connect to Primary.

Check the same information from below article.

Thank you for your answer.

Even if I install 10.10.10.10 on my network and configure Smart-redundancy with 10.10.10.11, won't the network be disconnected momentarily?

Once you Set the IP address 10.10.10.10 on new device >> Configure SR and connect to 10.10.10.11 >> APs will not get disconnect from Controller.
But, there will be a config push from Controller to APs about Standby IP address.

But when you login to 10.10.10.10 and starts connecting to 10.10.10.11 (Active) >>> Ensure to select "Select 'Sync from Peer' to pull the config from Primary/Active controller".
This will copy the config from 10.10.10.11 to 10.10.10.11.
If you choose the other option, it will push the config from 10.10.10.10 (Standby) to 10.10.10.11 (Active).

Note: Ensure to take a backup from current active (10.10.10.11) before connecting 10.10.10.10.
