I'd like to know the impact of disabling the bonjour service on my ZD-1200.

Hello,
A customer using the ZD-1200 (firmware version: 10.5.1.0 build 282) is currently undergoing a security audit by external personnel.

The customer says the security auditors are suspicious of why the bonjour service is enabled and whether it affects the security of the wireless network.

As far as I know, disabling the bonjour service blocks or disables mDNS traffic on the Ruckus wireless network.

Some users on the customer's network use iPhones or MacBooks, and they are not using AirPrint or Apple TV, as described in the official documentation.

Disabling the bonjour service may reduce mDNS traffic and thus the network load, but what services will this affect?

Please confirm.

Thank you.

Hi Msk,

Hope you are doing great !

Disabling the Bonjour service (which handles mDNS traffic) on the Ruckus ZD1200 will mainly affect Apple device discovery features. Core Wi-Fi connectivity and authentication for iPhones and MacBooks will remain unaffected, unless they rely on services like AirPrint or Apple TV.

Services impacted by disabling Bonjour include:
1.)AirPrint: Printing from Apple devices may not work automatically.
2.)Apple TV / AirPlay: Devices won’t detect Apple TVs for screen mirroring or streaming unless manually configured (e.g., using IP address).
3.)Device & Service Discovery: Features like finding other Macs, shared files, or HomeKit accessories may stop working.
4.)Shared iTunes Libraries: Users won’t be able to automatically discover shared libraries.
5.)Third-Party Bonjour Services: Some non-Apple devices (e.g., printers, collaboration tools) that use mDNS/Bonjour may also be affected.
