The ZoneFlex 2942 has an external antenna connector on it. Can this be used to add an additional antenna to the device? If so, what does it take to utilize an external antenna?

You can, but you'd lose the BeamFlex capability. It's not additional, but rather instead-of..
So if you have a specific application, such as needing to put a directional antenna in, it can be a good solution. But for a general dBi gain...not sure it would be useful.

Thanks for the info. In this particular instance it is for a directional antenna. Are there any recommendations for antennas which will work?

Unfortunately no. We never offered one ourselves as near as I can determine (that product is a little long in the tooth..). It's an RP-SMA male connector, 2.4Ghz and you'll be a bit on your own in terms of making sure you stay within FCC or other regulatory requirements. Sorry we can't be more help.
