I have an R650 running Ruckus Wireless Unleashed 200.17.7.0 build 139 and am trying to authenticate admins using a Freeradius server. I have the server configured, and when I run a test with my user it returns a success message.
Success! The user will be assigned a role of "Default".
I have the admin user set to authenticate with the Radius server, but I don't see an option where to allow other admin user accounts from my radius server. From what I can tell in the documentation, radius is only used for authenticating users to WLANs, and not for administration. Is this the case?

Hi bdub,
Thank you for posting your query !!!
I understand that Ruckus Unleashed with Freeradius not working.
Please follow the below Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Instructions
Verify AAA Server Connectivity from Unleashed:
Navigate to: Admin & Services > Services > AAA Servers > Test Authentication Servers Settings
Select the RADIUS server used for VLAN 1.
Enter valid test credentials and click Test.
Share the result (success or specific error message such as timeout or invalid credentials).
Check Client Connection Logs:
On the Clients page, select one affected client.
Click Troubleshooting, then start a Connectivity Trace.
Share the output [screenshot], especially where the process fails (association, authentication, etc.).
Check RADIUS Server Logs:
On Free radius , check logs for authentication attempts from the affected clients (MAC addresses or usernames).
Look for errors like: certificate validation failure, user not found, or timeout.
Verify Certificate Validity on Affected Clients:
Confirm the digital certificate on each problematic client is valid (not expired), correctly issued, and trusted by the RADIUS server.
Verify VLAN and Network Configuration:
Confirm the affected clients are assigned to VLAN 1.
Ensure the RADIUS server is reachable from VLAN 1 (try ping or similar from an AP or switch in VLAN 1).
Ensure no ACLs or firewall are blocking UDP ports 1812/1813 between APs and the RADIUS server.
Compare Working vs. Non-Working Clients:
Note any differences in OS version, certificate configuration, domain membership, or network settings.
Check RADIUS Server Capacity:
Ensure Radius server is not overloaded or applying rate limits that could cause timeouts.

Hello Mayank,
I'm trying to setup Radius for admin authentication only using an existing Freeradius server. I am NOT trying to use it for Client authentication (in fact I don't want this). So far the steps I've taken are:
1) Under "Admin & Services > Services > AAA Servers", created the AAA server. I perform the "Test Authentication Servers Settings" with my test user and it returns:
Success! The user will be assigned a role of "Default".
I checked the logs on the Radius server and it shows:
Tue Jul 15 14:35:13 2025 : Auth: (4796) Login OK: [test] (from client r650 port 0)
2) Under "Administration > Preferences" I enable the option to Authenticate with Auth Server, choosing the server I setup and tested in step 1.
Then I attempt to login with my test user via https/ssh but it fails. My Radius log shows:
Tue Jul 15 14:40:43 2025 : Auth: (4810) Login OK: [test] (from client r650 port 0)
However, the login page shows:
Login information is incorrect. Please try again.
Please note that this is a stand alone AP running Unleashed. I tried to locate some configuration guides/examples, but I could only find info on setting up NPS, or adding Roles for limiting user/client access. Can you point me to any documentation on setting up Radius for administrating a standalone AP running Unleashed?
Thanks!
