Is there a preferred method to control the number of AP's that download firmware after a controller upgrade

I need to upgrade a pair of redundant 3300's that are located in a managed data centre. The controller servers multiple sites over a corporate MPLS network. There are approx 350 AP's currently live on the controller from about 10 sites (not evenly split). I need to upgrade from the current version and would like to know if anyone has recommendations about how control the number of AP's updating firmware at any given point. Each site has about 30Mb MPLS connection abut i would like to avoid a free for all on the controller for the download of firmware.

I know i can remove the route or the vlan from the ports on a temp basis but this causes some management issue.

There isn't anything built in that I've ever seen, the best you could do is disable the POE ports to turn the AP's off and bring them up manually
