Ruckus R370

Hi,

I have a R370 with stand alone firmware which I would like to flash to Unleashed. There is no htttp or https service running and tying to use fw update via SSH tells me it cant find the ctrl file. Is it not possible to flash to Unleashed or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Sjaak

Hi @CIT

Greetings!!!

Thank you for reaching out to the RUCKUS Community Forums.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issues you are experiencing with your RUCKUS setup.

For the RUCKUS R370, conversion from standalone firmware to RUCKUS Unleashed is supported, but there are a few important points to clarify.

Why you're seeing the issue

1. No HTTP/HTTPS service running

  • In standalone firmware, the web server may be disabled.
  • You can verify this via CLI:

get http
get https

  • If disabled, enable with:

set http enable
set https enable
save

1. “Cannot find ctrl file” error via SSH

  • This usually happens when:
    • The Unleashed firmware file is incomplete
    • The .ctrl file is missing
    • The image was not extracted properly
    • Or the wrong firmware type was downloaded

Unleashed firmware packages contain both:

  • .bin
  • .ctrl

Both files must be present in the same directory when performing CLI upgrade.

Recommended Conversion Method (Best Practice)

For converting standalone >> Unleashed, the most reliable method is:

1. Download the correct R370 Unleashed firmware from the RUCKUS Support site.

2. Ensure both .bin and .ctrl files are present.

3. Use one of the following:

Option A – Web GUI (Preferred if HTTP/HTTPS is enabled)

  • Login to the standalone UI
  • Go to Maintenance >> Upgrade
  • Upload the Unleashed .bin file
  • Reboot after upgrade

Option B – TFTP Upgrade via CLI

If web access is unavailable:

fw update tftp <server-ip> <image-name>

Ensure:

  • TFTP server is reachable
  • Image file is in root directory
  • Firewall is not blocking

Important Note

Make sure:

  • The firmware is specifically labeled for R370 Unleashed
  • It is not a SmartZone or standalone image
  • The version supports conversion from your current standalone build

If you're still seeing the .ctrl file error, please share:

  • Current firmware version (get version)
  • Exact firmware file name you downloaded

I’ll help verify compatibility.

Thank you again.

Best regards,
