Disconnecting master AP less 1 minute

Hello Team,

I am very newbie with ruckus.  We have a place with 14 APs, master AP with wlan services disabled.

I need to disconnect Master AP just many seconds to change the cable with another longer.   Then I will need to enable wlan services (I think I know how to do this)

I read this: https://docs.commscope.com/bundle/unleashed-200.10-troublshootingref/page/GUID-EEC095C8-B1A7-47BE-88....

But I dont know how long does it take to boot the Master AP.  So I do not know what are the risks on doing this.

All APs are with DHCP and Management Interface is not enabled (I dont know what does it means yet)

I neither have experience with this.  So I have many questions:

* What do you think will happen?

* How long users will not connect to SSIDs?

* When the current master AP is online again, this will be master again?

* Somethink to have in mind?

* Any recommendation?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Damián

Hi @damianhlozano

Hope you are going well !

RUCKUS Unleashed is a high-performance, simple-to-setup, easy to-manage and affordable portfolio of access points. With built-in controller functionality, there’s no need to invest in a separate appliance ( controller ) .

Based on this technology Controller-less WLAN solutions, if the master AP goes down for some reason, a member AP will become the master to keep the network up.

Also we can setup or select the primary Master AP and Secondary preferred :

https://docs.commscope.com/bundle/unleashed-200.9-onlinehelp/page/GUID-99C3506C-62B7-4987-8F98-B6DE8...

When the primary Master AP is offline, the secondary preferred Master will assume the Master role. When the primary preferred Master returns online, it will resume the role again once it rejoins the Unleashed network.

The management interface is a interface or an IP assigned to this management interface that allow the administrator to manage the Unleashed network from a single IP address, regardless of which Unleashed AP is currently the Unleashed Master Access Point IP.

https://docs.commscope.com/bundle/unleashed-200.9-onlinehelp/page/GUID-13014E26-8E57-41C1-AA84-ED8E2...

Lets says an example my Master Access Point has an IP address 192.168.0.20 so I can access to the unleashed admin page using 192.168.0.20 but if I  configure an IP from the same subnet as the Access Points lets say 192.168.0.250 as the management interface I can access to the admin page using  192.168.0.250 regardless of what IP the Master has or if it changes to another IP or changes Role therefore the master is another IP.

Here is more details about this feature :

Hi Vasquez_Fer,

I have implemented Ruckus Networks Ruckus R650 and R750 access points in my network, and currently all the APs are working under the Unleashed dashboard.

My concern is regarding the Dedicated Master option. Since enabling Dedicated Master would reserve the AP mainly for controller functionality and not fully utilize the radio resources, I decided not to use that option and instead configured a Preferred Master setup.

We also performed a power-down test to verify whether the Secondary Master would take over properly if the Primary Master goes down. The failover is happening successfully from the Primary Master to the Secondary Master.

However, during the election process, I am experiencing approximately 30 seconds of downtime, during which all APs lose internet connectivity. This is becoming a major issue in the environment.

Could you please suggest if there are any methods to minimize this downtime? Alternatively, I would appreciate it if you could share any official documentation from Ruckus Networks regarding the expected failover behavior and best practices.

Note:
There is no static IP address configured for the access points.

Kindly review and advise.

Regards,
Murali

Hi @MURALI_KRISHNAN,

When the Master goes down, all the remaining APs will participate in the election role.
However, only the Secondary Master or Preferred Master AP will elected as Master.
Once the new Master is elected, the Member APs will receive new config and Master details.
Due to this Members will update its config file, this process will cause a 30 seconds downtime.

Thanks a lot Fernando!

I am fine, thanks, I hope you are going well to!!!

I just configured the management Interface with no problems, I can now access using this IP.

So, when I disconnect the current master AP, the WiFi will be available all the time using the secondary prefered Master as soon as the primary stop working?

When the primary is up again, this automatically will be Master?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Damián
