You can use single mode for any distance, however the transceiver/receivers power might need to be adjusted (attenuator). Actually, since the cost of single mode vs multi mode have become more comparable, most people are going single mode throughout, for future proofing their cable runs.
You wouldn't put in OM2,OM3 nowadays, OM4 typically if you go that route. Most people just use it in their data center (rack to rack).
