ICX7150 – DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation Client and Dynamic IPv6 Prefix Assignment

I have already contacted RUCKUS Support regarding this question. Unfortunately, technical assistance requires an active support contract.

Before considering additional network hardware, I would like to confirm whether the required functionality is actually supported by the ICX7150.

I am not asking for a complete configuration, just confirmation of the available product capabilities and, if possible, a reference to the relevant FastIron documentation.

I am using a RUCKUS ICX7150-24P as the central Layer 3 switch in my home network.

System details:

* Model: ICX7150-24P
* FastIron: 10.0.10jT213
* License: BASE_L3
* IPv4 inter-VLAN routing is already configured and working.

My upstream router is an AVM FRITZ!Box, connected to the ICX via VLAN 99.

I would like to enable IPv6 routing across multiple VLANs without introducing an additional router or changing the existing IPv4 architecture.

The FRITZ!Box can provide a dynamically delegated IPv6 prefix using DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation (IA_PD).

My questions are:

* Can the ICX7150 act as a DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation CLIENT (requesting router), requesting a prefix from the upstream FRITZ!Box?
* Can the received prefix be automatically divided into /64 subnets and assigned to multiple VE interfaces/VLANs?
* Can the switch automatically update IPv6 addresses, routes and Router Advertisements when the delegated prefix changes?
* Is this functionality supported in FastIron 10.0.10j with BASE_L3, or does it require a different firmware version or license?
* If native DHCPv6-PD client support is unavailable, is there an officially supported alternative for dynamically assigning an upstream IPv6 prefix to multiple routed VLANs?

I have found documentation covering DHCPv6 server-side prefix delegation and DHCPv6 relay functionality, but I could not establish whether the ICX can operate as the requesting router.

Could you please confirm whether this is supported and, if so, provide the required configuration commands or a reference to the appropriate documentation?

This is exactly the clarification I was looking for.

I can now evaluate alternative solutions for my home network without spending additional time searching for a DHCPv6-PD client feature that FastIron does not support.

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

After checking our documentation and consulting internally with my peers, FastIron does not support operating as a DHCPv6-PD Client (requesting router / IA_PD client).

While FastIron supports:

DHCPv6 Client for obtaining a single host address for the switch interface itself 
DHCPv6 Relay Agent
DHCPv6 Server (delegating router)
DHCPv6 Snooping (including IA_PD snooping in FastIron 10.0.20+)

It lacks the client-side requesting-router implementation required to request a delegated prefix pool from an upstream CPE/router.
