Hello, can the Unleashed r710 be set up as a stand alone AP/router so it is directly connected to my Comcast modem so I do not need another AP?

Yes, you can have a single Unleashed AP configured in Bridge Mode (pass-thru DHCP/DNS to Comcast router) or Gateway Mode (acting as an Internet router and can provide DHCP/DNS for your LAN clients) too.  Btw, its recommended to only use 802.11ac Wave 2 APs as Gateway Mode APs.
