Does Zone Director need an active license to communicate with Flex Master?

Our Firewall (pfSense) is communicating with both Flex Master and Zone Director, and suddenly the communication between these two stopped working. We suspect that it may be the Zone Director license that has expired and prevented this functionality. The configuration in Network Settings where it indicates the address of the Flex Master is OK. How could I better diagnose this?
