certain channel for all AP's ?
ali_sureyya_uz
Here is a student dormitory with 5 floor. Each floor has own 7982 AP's at the middle of hall. A ZD1106 controls them. Most users are smartphone users. Some of them always complain of suddenly loosing wireless connection. I have a suspicious about channel fly because lots devices are not new technology and might be cannot able to hear the migration of the AP's channel changes at channel fly. I want to cancel channel fly and test again my system. I will set the channels manually.
Should I set the same channels to the all AP's or set different channels per AP's?

Hi,
I would agree with your suspicion that ChannelFly may result in sudden wifi disconnection for clients that do not cope well with Channel Switch Announcements.
I would actually recommend using ChannelFly in "run-stop" mode in this case. In the AP Group Settings, you can check an option for "Turn off ChannelFly after ____ minutes of uptime". This will cause AP's to use ChannelFly to pick a channel, then shut off ChannelFly. Typical values are 60 minutes or 120 minutes. So, for the first hour/two after you reboot an AP, it will hop around and find a good channel, then stay there for the rest of the uptime. If a client complains about interference / poor performance on an AP, you can reboot it from the ZD to cause it to pick a different channel.
Another improvement on this that works really well for me is I've got two AP Groups, one called "ChannelFly" and one called "No ChannelFly". The only difference is "No Channelfly" has the run-stop option picked. So, once in a while during a low usage period, I move all the AP's to the ChannelFly group to have them pick some different channels, then I move them back to the "No Channelfly" group.
If you are manually assigning channels, you should definitely
NOT
assign the same channel to every AP. You should pick different channels on each AP, and channels without much interference. Of course, this is much easier said than done, which is exactly what Ruckus came up with ChannelFly technology.
Some people say you can also use Background Scanning instead of ChannelFly, but personally, I've found that Background Scanning also jumps around a bit, and is not as good as run-stop ChannelFly.
Also, do you have SmartRoam configured by any chance?

Please tell me more about SmartRoam, how can activate ?
Suggest me channels to set;
1.floor ch:?
2.floor ch:?
3.floor ch:?
4.floor ch:?
5.floor ch:?

The channels to use in your site is strongly dependent on what interference is present in your area. The best way to come up with initial channel assignments is either via ChannelFly or via a wifi site survey (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_site_survey
)
The general rule of thumb is to use different non-overlapping channels on AP's that can see each other, to avoid co-channel interference.
You don't want to enable SmartRoam. It's off by default, but often suggested to solve "sticky client" and roaming problems. However, it can also lead to clients being inadvertently kicked off your network.

What do you mean by "However, it can also lead to clients being inadvertently kicked off your network" , what can cause that ? If there is a manual algoritm for choosing best channell by RSSI ?

That quote is specific to the SmartRoam feature:

SmartRoam works by kicking off clients that have a weak signal in the hopes that they reassociate to a better located AP. But again, this is a command that you have to turn on via the command line. If you do not remember SSH'ing into your ZD and messing with smart_roam commands, this information almost certainly doesn't apply to you.
