I’ve been looking at how people approach RUCKUS deployments when a network is expected to grow over time, and I’m curious how others decide on the hardware mix.
For a small deployment, choosing an access point is relatively straightforward. But once you’re dealing with multiple buildings, higher client density, outdoor coverage, and a combination of wired and wireless users, the decision becomes more complicated.
One thing I’ve found useful is looking at the entire network rather than choosing the APs in isolation. The access points, ICX switches, uplinks, PoE requirements, optical connectivity, and management platform all need to work together.
For example, when comparing RUCKUS indoor and outdoor APs, I’d consider:
- Expected client density
- Coverage requirements and building layout
- Wi-Fi 6/6E requirements
- PoE availability
- 1GbE vs. higher-speed uplinks
- Number of switches and APs that will eventually be deployed
- Whether centralized or cloud-based management makes more sense
- Future expansion requirements
I’ve also found that planning the supporting infrastructure early can make a big difference. A suitable AP may perform well initially, but if the switching capacity, PoE budget, uplinks, or management setup can’t support future expansion, the network can become harder to scale later.
For that reason, I’m interested in how other RUCKUS users approach the planning process.
When you’re designing a network that may double or triple in size over the next few years, do you prioritize the AP model first, or do you start with the switching, PoE, and management architecture?
