Hello RUCKUS Community,
I am troubleshooting a RUCKUS ICX7150-C12P installed in my Lennar home. I was able to restore operation of the switch and connected RUCKUS access points through the console, but I encountered several issues that I would like to resolve permanently.
The system is currently working, including wired Ethernet and the RUCKUS wireless access points. However, based on what happened during recovery, I am concerned that the switch may fail to boot again following the next power outage.
A. NAND/ECC and Boot-Image Errors
During troubleshooting, the switch stopped at:
ICX7150-Boot>
When attempting to boot, the primary image produced errors including:
NAND read: device 0 offset 0x0, size 0x2000000
5 ecc_errors after reading 1b48000:1b49800
iproc_nand_read_page returned 2
NAND read from offset 0 failed -22
0 bytes read: ERROR
Bad FIT kernel image format!
ERROR: can't get kernel image!
The switch then attempted the secondary image, which also produced:
NAND read: device 0 offset 0x4000000, size 0x2000000
1 ecc_errors after reading 5b48000:5b49000
iproc_nand_read_page returned 2
NAND read from offset 4000000 failed -22
0 bytes read: ERROR
Bad FIT kernel image format!
ERROR: can't get kernel image!
It then returned to:
ICX7150-Boot>
After additional attempts through the console, I was eventually able to get the switch to boot successfully.
It is currently operational. The status lights are green, the Ethernet ports throughout the house are working, PoE is powering the RUCKUS access points, and the wireless network is operational.
B. Major Concern – What Happens at the Next Power Outage?
This is now my primary concern.
Although everything is working, I do not have confidence that the ICX7150-C12P will boot automatically following the next power outage or restart.
During this recovery, the switch failed to load its images and stopped at ICX7150-Boot>. I eventually managed to get it running manually through the console.
Because this switch distributes wired Ethernet throughout my home and provides PoE/network connectivity to the RUCKUS wireless access points, another failed boot could again take down both the wired network and the RUCKUS Wi-Fi infrastructure.
Could you please advise on the permanent corrective action needed to ensure that this switch will boot normally and automatically following a future power outage?
Specifically:
- Do these NAND/ECC errors indicate corrupted primary/secondary software images, failing NAND flash memory, or another problem?
- Should the primary and/or secondary boot images be reinstalled/recovered?
- Are there diagnostic commands I can run while the switch is currently operational to determine the health of the NAND flash and both boot images?
- Is there a procedure to verify that both primary and secondary images are healthy before intentionally rebooting the switch?
- Can these NAND/ECC errors normally be corrected through software recovery, or could they indicate a hardware failure requiring replacement of the ICX7150-C12P?
- Until this is resolved, should I avoid intentionally rebooting or power-cycling the switch?
C. Username/Password Recovery
I also still need assistance establishing permanent administrator credentials.
Before recovery, the switch presented:
User Access Verification
Please Enter Login Name:
Please Enter Password:
I attempted the username super, but authentication failed.
At the boot monitor, I followed the RUCKUS password-recovery instructions and entered:
no password
The switch responded:
00 00 00 00
OK! Skip password check when the system is up.
I subsequently got the switch to boot successfully.
However, after booting, I was again presented with:
User Access Verification
Please Enter Login Name:
Pressing Enter without entering a username resulted in:
User login failure.
Therefore, I still do not have administrator access to the running switch.
Could you please clarify:
- After successfully executing
no password, what username should I use to access the CLI? - Should the console allow access without a password after this recovery procedure?
- What is the correct procedure to reach the CLI and establish a new administrator account?
- What commands should I use to create a new permanent administrator username and password?
- How should I save the credentials so they survive a power outage/reboot?
- Will changing the ICX administrator credentials have any effect on the existing RUCKUS Wi-Fi SSID/password or devices currently connected to Wi-Fi?
- Given the NAND/ECC errors, is it safe to execute
write memory or other commands that write to flash, or should I wait until the NAND/boot-image problem is addressed?
Current Status
At the moment:
- ICX7150-C12P is operational with green status lights.
- Wired Ethernet to the rooms is working.
- PoE is operational.
- RUCKUS wireless access points are powered and operational.
- Internet connectivity is working through the switch.
- I still do not have administrator CLI access.
- The switch has previously failed to boot because of the NAND/ECC and
Bad FIT kernel image format errors. - I have not intentionally rebooted or power-cycled the switch again since restoring service.
My priority is to correct the underlying boot issue so that the home network will recover automatically after a future power outage, while also establishing permanent administrator credentials.
I would appreciate step-by-step guidance on the safest way to proceed without disrupting the currently functioning network.
Thank you for your assistance.
