Ruckus switch ICX 7150 - IP lost after hard reset

Hi,

As you asked me to create a new ticket, so here it is. There was a power outrage in my home. After that, the wifi got really slow. Before that, the switch ICX 7150 used to show 'disconnected' in the unleashed dashboard. Also, it didn't have the latest firmware to work with unleased. However, I had ignored it because the wifi was working fine, and I got busy at work.

After the recent power outrage, I went through some topics here and found similar issue raised by members. I tried to fi it myself so I did hard reset on switch because I didn't have login/password credentials and none of the default credentials worked. After the hard reset, the switch has no IP address. I would need your help to configure the switch to its latest firmware, and to be able to connect it in the unleased. I hope after this fix, the wifi should start functioning properly. I have Macbook and no windows laptop to work with.

Thank you for your response and for providing the detailed update.

It’s great to see that your Switch has been successfully upgraded to the recommended version.

Since one of your Access Points is showing as disconnected on the Unleashed dashboard, please try unplugging the Ethernet cable of this Access Point from its current Switch port and reconnect it to any of the available ports from 1 to 12 on the Switch (refer to the screenshot below).

Kindly test this and let me know if it resolves the issue.

Attached the snapshots of switch, 3 APs status, and unleased dashboard. Please note that the IP address that is shown is old. The LanScan shows no IP address for switch. I can see IP addresses for the 3 APs.

Based on the information provided, it appears that you are encountering intermittent internet connectivity via RUCKUS devices after a power outage.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and are committed to assisting you promptly.

I see from the screenshot that this is a Routing Code issue because of the power outage.

To help resolve this, please try the following steps:

1. Attempt to access the device using the IP address 192.168.1.64 (refer to the screenshot provided).

2. If that does not work, unplug the Internet Service Provider (ISP) Ethernet cable from the current port, connect it to any of the other available 1–12 ports (screenshot below) on the Switch, restart your ISP router once, and then use LanScan to check if a new IP address has been assigned to the RUCKUS Switch.

3. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, please try accessing the console on your Mac using the method described below.’

Kindly disregard the drivers demonstrated in the video. Instead, please download and install the drivers listed below before accessing the switch via the Mac terminal:

Install the necessary drivers to enable communication with the switch (ICX-7150-C12P) using a USB Type-C to console cable.

Hi Imran,

Till yesterday, there was no IP assigned to Ruckus switch. Today, I see that previously shared IP has been assigned.

However, I can not login because the super/sp-admin credentials do no work. Since IP address is assigned, I have skipped step2.

Should I try step 3 now?

Step3: As per the video, I do not have USB to serial - RJ-45 combination. Instead, I have USBC-RJ45 using usb multi adapter. I tried with this combination but mac doesn't recongnize the usb (the usb driver was installed successfully). I also tried with USBC-USBC cable but did not work. This is what I get.

/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port /dev/cu.WH-CH510

/dev/cu.debug-console

The switch is installed inside a cupboard that I can not remove to check the backside of it to see the login credentials, if any.

The switch IP is playing cat and mouse with me. I had to restart router. After that, the IP to switch is lost. I then followed step 2. I switched the ethernet port to one of the 12. I re-started router. I checked LanScan, no IP is assigned to switch. In fact, 1.64 is assigned to none. Needless to say that this is getting really frustrating. Any help?

I have described the steps/process in my 1.5 hrs efforts. Please read.

Now, I disconnected power pug from router and switch. After this, I checked LanScan and 1.64 is assigned to switch.

When my mac wifi is connected to Ruckus wifi (that I had created a few weeks back), the switch IP 1.64 is unreachable. I think 1 AP is also unreachable.

when my mac wifi is connected to AT&T wifi, the switch IP 1.64 is reachable i.e. ping to IP works. But 1 or 2 out of 3 APs IPs are unreachable. Physically, all APs have got power and I can see the green LEDs.

Okay! Now, I'm going to restart switch. power OFF/ON.

so after restarting switch, I see the 1.64 IP is still assigned to switch. With AT&T wifi, I see switch IP and 2 other AP IPs. One AP IP is lost.

switching wifi to Ruckus wifi - this time, the switch IP is reachable. One 2 out of 3 APs IPs are reachable. Upon manual inspection, I noticed that one AP's (not the master one) power LED is toggling green (not solid).

I hope you can make some sense out of this paradox. I will wait for some useful suggestions.

The issue with the AP should be resolved once we fix the Routing Code.

Regarding CLI access, could you please try connecting via Telnet? The detailed steps are provided in the RUCKUS Lennar Knowledge Base self-help article below:

Additionally, I recommend trying to access the CLI using a Windows laptop, as it simplifies the troubleshooting process.

Thank you for the reply.

The ssh doesn't work. The telnet doesn't work. I do not have a windows laptop, and I'm not going to buy one just for this fix.

Step1:

ssh admin@192.168.1.64

ssh super@192.168.1.64

Error: Unable to negotiate with 192.168.1.64 port 22: no matching key exchange method found. Their offer: diffie-hellman-group14-sha1,diffie-hellman-group1-sha1

Step2:

nano ~/.ssh/config

Host 192.168.1.64

ssh -oHostKeyAlgorithms=+ssh-rsa super@192.168.1.64

ssh -oHostKeyAlgorithms=+ssh-rsa admin@192.168.1.64

Step3:

nc 192.168.1.64 23

no output, and no change in the command prompt.

Step4:

I plugged usbc-console cable in mac and switch (console port #15). The usb driver was already installed yesterday.

ls /dev/*usb* --> gives

/dev/cu.usbserial-A9L4QDQB /dev/tty.usbserial-A9L4QDQB

screen /dev/cu.usbserial-A9L4QDQB

screen /dev/tty.usbserial-A9L4QDQB

gives error that sorry could not find a PTY, and it gets terminated.

Somehow, I do not see the silicon lab driver in usb, however, the mac tray icon shows CP210xVCPDriver.

what to do next ?? How do I access the CLI ?

I unplugged usbc from mac and re-plugged, and then tried below command from the terminal.

This time a blank screen appears. When I press a key, it asked for login/password. I thought USBc-console cable is to bypass the login credentials, but it does ask. At this point, I'm totally lost.

Update: after taking help from ChatGpt, I was able to reset the login/password.

1. Connect Console

Plug the USB-C console cable into the switch’s USB-C console port and the other end into your MacBook.
On macOS, the device will appear as something like: ls /dev/tty.*
you should see entries like:
/dev/tty.usbserial-XXXXX /dev/tty.debug-console
The tty.usbserial… is usually the right one
2. Open Terminal Session
screen /dev/tty.usbserial-XXXXX 9600
- Default baud rate for ICX switches is 9600.
  3. Interrupt Boot
  Power cycle the switch.
  As soon as you see boot messages, press b (sometimes Ctrl+B depending on bootloader version).
  You should enter the boot monitor (Boot>) prompt.
  4. Reset Password
  From the Boot> prompt:
  Boot into “fastiron” with password recovery disabled:
  
  no password
  boot
  Once it loads, you’ll be in privileged mode without a password.
  5. Set New Credentials
  Enter global config mode:
  
  enable
  configure terminal
  username admin password yournewpassword

Save config:

write memory

After this, I was able to login to switch IP.

I now need your help to upgrade the firmware/routing code for this switch. Thanks.

Hi Imran,

After following a similar thread, I had tried this step yesterday but didn't work. I tried just now and didn't work. I have also attached the ICX IP access gui screenshot - to show that my credentials work, but the same credentials do not work in the upgrade software for mac.

Kindly ensure that only the IP address is entered in the ‘Switch IP’ field on the upgrade tool dashboard, without including ‘http://’.

Yesterday, I did password reset again. After connecting usbc-console cable.

from mac terminal: screen /dev/tty.usbserial-A9L4QDQB 9600

switch power off and on

waited for a few sec, and then interrupted boot (before the count down finished)

> no password

>boot

I let it finish.

I see the prompt as "ICX7150-C12 Switch>".

Let me provide you the outputs of your requests. Earlier, I was seeing ICX switch Router> , this time it shows ICX switch>
