Hello All,

In this article, I will explains an issue with customer DHCP configuration (related to DNS Domain name) which can potentially cause AP connectivity issue with RUCKUS Cloud.

Symptoms

If you hit this issue, AP may show online but as soon as you make any configuration changes on venue, AP, WLAN, it will result AP state changing to "Never contacted Cloud".

AP will not show any new event, since the time of its last successful connection to Cloud.
In some cases AP will also show in "Operational - applying configuration" state on Cloud UI and will never complete applying configuration.

AP will still serve clients with last known configuration (if AP was not rebooted).

How to troubleshoot?

Run a capture on switch port where AP is connected and reboot the AP.
Note: This will not help if AP is configured with static IP configuration.

Check the uplink packet capture and analyze (look at the DHCP Offer frame) the DHCP packets for the DHCP process.

You will see DHCP server sending DNS domain name information.

When Domain Name is added to the DHCP and configured on AP, AP will append the AP-Cloud discovery URL which is device.ruckus.cloud to device.ruckus.cloud.xyz.com. Because of this change in Cloud URL, AP will not be able to reach the correct controller IP (usually DNS resolution will fail) and will eventually fail to connect to Cloud.

In case domain specific URL (in this case "device.ruckus.cloud.xyz.com") has a valid DNS entry on customer/public DNS server, it will further result in connection failure as resulted IP address will not match with the correct Cloud controller IP address.

You can also factory reset one AP and then SSH into it (with default credentials super/sp-admin), run below commands to confirm if AP is getting the DNS Domain name configuration from DHCP.

Run and review the output of "get dns" command.

Output when DNS Domain name is received from DHCP server.

rkscli:
rkscli: get dns
Allow DNS from DHCP: Enabled
Ethernet DNS servers:
DNS 1 : 8.8.8.8
DNS 2 : 8.8.4.4

IPv6 DNS Setting

DNS Domain
<None>

DNS Search List
<None>
OK

Output when DNS Domain name is received from DHCP server

rkscli:
rkscli: get dns
Allow DNS from DHCP: Enabled
Ethernet DNS servers:
DNS 1 : 8.8.8.8
DNS 2 : 8.8.4.4

Resolution

While issue is impacting RUCKUS APs, this is completely an issue caused by customer DNS and/or DHCP server configuration.

Follow below steps to fix the issue.

Check and remove the domain name configuration from DHCP IP pool which is used for RUCKUS Access points.

Just updating the configuration on DHCP server may not fix APs as APs will still hold old IP which has valid lease time. In this case you may reboot the AP so that AP can get the fresh IP lease from DHCP server without DNS domain name. Also clearing the IP lease from DHCP server can help.

Even after rebooting or re-requesting IP from DHCP if issue is not solved, remove the AP from the Cloud and re-add.

If you continue seeing issue even after fixing the DHCP configuration, please contact RUCKUS Support and report the issue.

I hope this will help!

Make sure that the switches that are to be updated are of the specific venue.

2 . If there are multiple locations managed under the same venue and only a specific location needs to be updated : then this may not be the best option to follow.

3 . In case, point 2 applied to you : then device local updates are best way to go about the upgradation. Via TFTP,USB etc.

if you are not an MSP, and there are multiple locations of install : but all are devices are under the same venue.
Then device local updates are best way to go about the upgradation. Via TFTP,USB etc.

If different locations are managed under different venues, there should be no issues in following this process/procedure.

To ensure proper communication between the APs and switches with RUCKUS One, customers must allow some FQDNs and Ports in their Firewall.

Customer Environment

APs and Switches deployed behind a firewall and inbound/outbound traffic needs to be allowed for successful communication between RUCKUS network devices and RUCKUS One.

Symptoms

Newly added APs and switches are in Never Contacted Cloud state, not joining RUCKUS One.

Resolution

To allow RUCKUS One to function properly, please configure your firewall to allow for outbound connectivity according to the following guidelines:

Outbound HTTPS (TCP 443) from APs and Switches to:

https://ap-registrar.ruckuswireless.com
https://sw-registrar.ruckuswireless.com
https://ocsp.comodoca.com
https://ocsp.entrust.net
https://ruckus.cloud
https://eu.ruckus.cloud
https://asia.ruckus.cloud
https://device.ruckus.cloud
https://device.eu.ruckus.cloud
https://device.asia.ruckus.cloud
https://storage.googleapis.com
http://ocsp.godaddy.com

Outbound SSH (TCP 22) from APs and Switches to:

device.ruckus.cloud
device.eu.ruckus.cloud
device.asia.ruckus.cloud

Network Requirements

The following list of firewall ports is required to allow APs to enable Cloud discovery and continued connection with the Cloud

Checking the firewall ports is the first step of troubleshooting if an AP is unable to connect to the Cloud or disconnects from the Cloud.

As a Ruckus TAC engineer, I would like to share my experience with some AP model with Single LAN port AP( for example R350) where option to change the untagged VLAN ID on AP LAN port is greyed out on Ruckus cloud GUI.

We can see that even when the enable port is checked, we are unable to update the VLAN untagged ID on the cloud GUI.

Many customers have inquired about the inability of a certain AP model, such as the R350, to modify the untagged VLAN ID on the cloud.

This is the design objective for a single LAN port APs, as there is no VLAN given in the ethernet frame for untagged traffic.

For example, our AP on VLAN 1 will be able to communicate with any other side device on any untagged VLAN.

Any changes to the AP for the untagged VLAN ID that are necessary to get the AP onto the chosen subnet must be made at the switch port level where AP is connected.

I hope you find this information useful.

In my work as a TAC support agent for RUCKUS Wireless products, I've recently encountered cases where iPhone and MacBook users complain of frequent disconnections from the wireless network. I've been able to resolve those cases by following the steps below.

This is part of the symptom you will see in the AP support log:

Aug 19 17:58:11 clbd sta join XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX wlan3(YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY) 1 rssi=(25 42) 2g(0x0 4 31) 5g(0x0 4 13)
Aug 19 17:58:12 clbd sta leave XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX wlan36(YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YZ) rc=1 rss(20 0) 0 pkt(3588 12841) byte(498065 12750895)
Aug 19 17:58:15 clbd sta join XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX wlan36(YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YZ) 116 rssi=(11 22) 2g(0x0 4 29) 5g(0x0 4 12)
Aug 19 17:58:16 clbd sta leave XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX wlan3(YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY) rc=1 rss(43 0) 0 pkt(1011 2437) byte(101751 2409641)
Aug 19 17:58:20 clbd stamac=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX bssid:YY:YY:YY:YY:YY:YZ score=0 oldstate:NONE newstate:GOOD

I tried ensuring that the airtime was decongested and free of interference, the RSSI was good, the SNR was good, and coverage for roaming was good. There weren't any notorious sources of interference, high retransmission rates, or physical errors in the APs.

For troubleshooting, I even enabled features like 'RSSI threshold' and 'Transient Client Management', but none of those were causing any difference in the constant and annoying disconnections.

So, I started to suspect more and more that there was an issue with those Apple devices, especially when there wasn't an obvious reason for this problem. I began to research within online forums and Apple support pages, an I found many people were complaining about this issue, but there wasn't an actual resolution or valuable comments from the Apple support team until I found this Apple support forum.

This is the workaround that worked for every customer I have suggested it:

In your iPhone:

1. Go to Settings, scroll down, and select 'Privacy and Security.'

2. Select 'Location Services' and make sure the toggle is switched on.

3. Scroll down and select 'System Services.'

4. Switch off the toggle for 'Networking and Wireless.'

5. Forget the Wi-Fi network and then reconnect.

After applying these steps in iPhones running iOS 16.1 the issue was solved immediately. However, the computers kept disconnecting. Then, an upgrade on the computers to the MacOS Ventura version 13.6, finally solved the disconnection issues for the MacBooks as well.

I hope this article is useful if you're experiencing similar issues.

Error encountered below:

Reason for getting the above error:

The TI PoE chipset is different for the newly released/manufactured switches with 7150-48ZP Model.

These PoE chipset work from version 8095k and above in 8095 major release and 9010h and above in 9010 major releases

Hence if you need the switches to operate with PoE then you will need to retain 8095k. If you want to add these switches to the cloud, you need to wait for 9010h release for TI PoE chipset to work.

If you try adding switches with TI PoE issue to cloud, you will encounter below error messages.

How to identify the 7150-48ZP switches have new PoE chipset:

Check the MCU details of the switch using “dm hwinfo” command. These are mostly 2023 batches of switches which have new TI PoE chipset.

Workaround:

If you want to use switch model 7150-48ZP switch model with TI PoE chipset in cloud, then wait for 9010h version to have PoE feature and bring these switches up in cloud.

If you don’t need the switch to be part of cloud and need PoE feature, then retain the switch in 8095k version.

FTP is generally faster than TFTP.

FTP uses TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) for data transmission, which provides error checking and correction, ensuring that the entire file is correctly received. This makes FTP more reliable and faster for transferring large files or over networks with high error rates.

Here is a quick guide to deploying an FTP server on your computer:

1. Download and install the Mobaxterm app.

2. Go to 'Network Services' and click the configuration gears for the FTP server.

3. Select the Folder for the file location and configure a username and password. I recommend disabling the option 'Prompt me before accepting any incoming connections' and enabling 'Allow anonymous connections'.

4. Click 'OK' and 'Start'. The server will start. It will also start a time countdown that will disable the FTP service once this gets to 0.

5. Your FTP server is ready for file transfers.

Mobaxterm is an amazing app with many tools that can help us on our daily tasks. Take a look at this KB so you learn how to use it for SNMP operations on your ICX switch.

This limit is specified in the datasheet of each AP model. For instance, consider the datasheet for the AP R350:

The AP R350 can only broadcast a total of 16 (user-configured) SSIDs. The total count of SSIDs includes those broadcasting on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands separately. In other words, there are 8 SSID slots per radio band. This implies that if you have a WLAN named 'wlan-name' that's broadcasting on both radio bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), it's utilizing two of the available SSID slots.

There are additional SSIDs reserved for other functions like mesh networking and recovery purposes. These SSIDs are not considered in the maximum SSID capacity.

You can verify the WLANs your AP is currently broadcasting by using the AP CLI command 'get wlanlist' to check the actual number of SSIDs broadcasting. But make no mistake, this command ONLY shows configured and enabled WLANs. There could be also configured and disabled WLANs occupying SSIDs slots.

Here is an example from the AP R350. This Access Point seems to be using using 4 of the available 8 slots for 5GHz SSIDs ('Internet', 'ruckus-pruebas', 'wlan1', 'wlan2'):

Yet, this AP is already oversubscribed. I can confirm that by checking the SSIDs in WLAN group assigned to this AP.

In the controller, I reviewed the WLAN group and confirmed it has got a total of 10 configured WLANs. 4 WLANs are enabled, 6 WLANs are disabled.

Resolution:

If you have confirmed your AP is actually oversubscribed, the recomendation is to reduce the number of SSIDs.

It could be possible that moving an AP between different AP Zones could trigger a false positive event, indicating that the AP is oversubscribed. If the actual number of configured WLANs is within the AP's capacity, it's recommended to reset the AP to its factory defaults to clear the false positive and let it onboard the controller again.

href="https://community.ruckuswireless.com/t5/RUCKUS-Self-Help/Ruckus-Cloud-API-Authentication-Using-JWT/td-p/57867" target="_self">Ruckus Cloud API - Authentication Using JWT. Once the JWT has been obtained and configured as an Environment variable, you can start using the following APIs:

<a

Hey all,

I wanted to take a moment to touch on the minimum code level to onboard an ICX switch to RUCKUS Cloud. In order for an ICX to begin the onboarding process to RUCKUS Cloud, they must be running a minimum code level of 8090d. To confirm your code level, you can use the "show version" command. If you happen to be running code older than 8090d, you will need to manually upgrade your ICX. Here are the recommended upgrade paths coming from older code:

-If you are running 8080 flat to 8090c, upgrade directly to 8095ca via UFI image

-If you are running any 8070 patch or older, we will need to do a multi-step upgrade. The upgrade path will be: 8070x or older > 8080f (non-ufi) > 8095ca UFI

Additional details are documented in our FastIron Management Guide here and our Cloud User Guide here

Please make sure that the Smart Zone controller is running the recommended version 5.2.x version as this procedure is written with that assumption.

Step 1: Testing connectivity and firewall ports for cloud connectivity

Access and setup the Ruckus Cloud dashboard and licensing

Getting Started Section and Licensing Guide (Admin Guide): https://docs.commscope.com/bundle/ruckuscloud-2201B-onlinehelp/page/GUID-345B88CB-3982-4B1C-9468-0E270FA4151F.html

Add the AP serial number to the Ruckus Cloud Dashboard at https://ruckus.cloud > Networking Devices > Add AP

Access one AP that is currently active on the smart zone using the SSH

The credentials will be located on the Zone configuration on your Smart Zone controller

Factory reset the AP using # set factory command

The AP if has internet access (following ports are open) will connect to the cloud controller and show with active status

Replicate the wireless configuration to match the smart zone and test if a client can connect to the one AP we moved over

Once we can bring up one AP and the licensing part is validated, we can proceed with moving the reset of the AP’s

Step 2: Finding the cloud controller IP address

Open the Cloud controller UI and head over to Networking devices

Select the AP we moved over and tested on the first step

Click on the “More Actions” tab found on the right

Select “Download Log” option

Once the file is downloaded – search for the following string “Server List:”

Save this IP address as this the Cloud Server that manages the access points – this will be used in step 3

Step 3: Initiating the production access points in one click

Move all AP’s that are intended to be moved to cloud to a single zone and make sure the zone firmware is set to 5.2.x

Zone > More > Change AP firmware

Head over to System > AP Setting > Approval – disable the “Automatically approve all join requests from Aps” toggle and hit OK

This prevents the AP’s from coming back to the SZ after the migration

Make a copy of the access point details by

Head over to Access Points > select the zone that has the AP’s that will be moved over to cloud

Head over to Access Points > select the Zone which has the AP’s parked and on the far right look for the “Export all data to CSV file” option

This will be the list that we can use in case of a failure to manually move any AP’s that are stuck due to network conditions

Once the above is completed it is time to move the AP’s to cloud – one zone at a time

Select “More” from the drop down just above the Zone names and select switch Over Cluster

Feed in the Server IP we fetched from Step 2 and make sure to enable the “Delete Selected Access Points after switch over” toggle

Step 4: Verify and move any AP’s that did not show up on cloud

Use the CSV file we collected to find if any AP did not make it to cloud

Factory reset the AP as per step 1 and execute the command “set scg ip <IP of cloud server>”

In this self help topic, we will discuss and explain a design intent of M510 where it doesn't pass IP to clients if local DHCP server is not configured.

What is the problem?

Wireless clients connecting on a M510 access point (Cloud managed) are not getting IP address.

What is the Root Cause?

This is as per product design.

As per the M510 design, a local DHCP configuration is must on the AP because this AP has dual WAN connection capabilities with LTE SIM. In case of LTE connection, there is no way to pass IP over DHCP from ISP network, thus local DHCP is must on the AP.

What are the Symptoms?

There are two major symptoms if you hit this design intent:

M510 on Ruckus Cloud with a DPSK SSID

In this type of configuration, you will not be able to enable Network (SSID) on the venue, if there is one or more M510 AP in it.

System will show "Activating network" the WLAN and it will circle in loop.

If you refresh the page, WLAN will show in disable state.

M510 on Ruckus Cloud with a non-DPSK SSID (any auth type than DPSK)

System will not show any error.

It will allow you to enable SSID on the venue with M510 AP in it.

Client will be able to connect to WLAN but further it will not get an IP address.

What is the Solution?

Make sure that DHCP service is configured and enabled on per AP basis for M510 APs, under venue settings.

To configure, go to Venue > DHCP > WiFi > Enable DHCP service > Choose "Simple DHCP".

For step by step procedure on "How to create DHCP service and enable it on venue", please refer online help page from here.
