I am having a similar issue with ZD1100 stuck in rescue mode. A message tells me it can't boot the Zone director Image properly. What can I do about that? What is the image I am supposed to see? Is there a download or other fix for this?

Hi @uplinkal,

Thank you for reaching out to us over the forum.

Below are the steps you can follow from the article:
First, try to recover the ZD using the “Perform Reboot” option, as this will preserve the existing configuration on the ZD.

Click “Perform Reboot” after reboot and it will redirect to the ZD login page, if this does not work, follow the below steps

2. Click “Perform FDISK” to reformat/clear the USB contents which will erase all the configuration on ZD.
Successful FDISK displays the message as “FDISK complete”

3. Install/upgrade the firmware on ZD using “Perform Upgrade”

**Any 9.5 or 9.6 image file can be used to upgrade
4. If the above does not help, please try to hard reset the ZD by inserting a paper clip or any point object into the RESET hole and press & hold it for 15-20 seconds.
Once the ZD is reset it can be reached on 192.168.0.2.

If above all fails, then the Device could be faulty so raise a case with Support to have the RMA initiated.

I cannot log into the ZD1100. As soon as I enter 192.168.0.2 (ENTER), a screen comes up showing it is in RESCUE MODE. I tried the FDISK and it replied "successful" but when I click on "reboot" nothing happens. I see a message at the top of the screen telling me that there is a problem with the zone director image. I don't even know what that is. Where can I find a replacement image?

The unit appears to be functioning normally otherwise.

Sadly, not working. I think the ZD1100 has gone south on me.

I bought the ZD1100 at an estate sale along with an R700 (which appears to work fine). The ZD1100 had been opened (before i bought it) and the USB drive had been removed. I replaced it with a drive of my own (16GB) but it did not make any difference in the operation. I also noticed that the MAC address did not appear as correct. That last three sets of the address were all ZEROES, which did not match the label on the bottom of the ZD1100.

I have a second ZD1100 which I also bought at the estate sale and I will try that one next. This has turned out be a harder project than I imagined! All for the sake of a wireless access point!

One final question (hopefully): where do I find the "Setup Wizard"? was it on a CD or is burned into the devices? I can't seem to find anything on it.

For ZD, you can find the setup wizard only when you do the Factory Reset.
You can login to the GUI after the Factory Reset and it will redirect to Setup Wizard.

I have stablished that the first Zone Director 1100 has failed and that it is missing the internal USB drive. I have a second unit which I have powered up and reset, it will not login using 192.168.0.2. It gives me an error message telling that "The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite." What does that mean and how can I correct it. These units were both purchased used at a bankruptcy/estate sale so I am not the original owner.

Looks like the ZD is on very old version.
Early Ruckus ZoneDirector (Server) Supports only TLS 1.0, did not support TLS 1.1 , TLS 1.2 and SSL 3.0 Cipher Suites.

To fix this, you might need to use a very old browser version. Try Firefox version 30 or something.

Well, that helped me get it running but sadly during a firmware upgrade I seem to have taken a power glitch and have bricked my ZD1100. I can't get it to do anything now. An work-around for a firmware interruption? I've tried a factory reset but that did no good. 192.168.0.2 takes me to the rescue screen and I'm dead in the water now. Can't FDISK, can't upgrade f/w, can't reboot. This is the most difficult device I have ever work on. Any ideas to save this or has it become my newest boat anchor.

If you are sure that the Hard Reset went through then the Zone Director might have gone faulty.

Or Try to Hard Reset the Zone Director by following the below steps.

- Locate the Reset pinhole on the front panel of the Zone director.
- Insert a paper clip or any point object into the RESET hole and press & hold it for 15-20 seconds.
- This factory defaults the ZD.

If the above does not help then please raise a support case to initiate the RMA.

I finally got the Ruckus ZD1100 to work and logged in OK. I am confused with the instructions on how to pair it with the R700. Any short cuts or anything simplified for me to understand. I am new at this. Do I need a new license? Or can I use it as-is.

Hi @uplinkal,

In order to support R700 the ZD should start with the firmware 9.8.0.0.203. From the above replies, I noticed the ZD is on 9.6 or 9.7.

Once the ZD is on 9.8 version the AP should get connected. Please login into the AP CLI and execute the commands "get version" and "get director".
If the AP is not getting connected. please execute the command "set director ip <IP of the Zone Director>" and "reboot".

ZD comes with 5 licenses. Please let us know the number of AP you are trying to connect.

Please update us with the results.

You can download the image file from the below link and upgrade the ZD if running earlier than 9.8 version.

The ZD can be upgraded from the 9.6 or 9.7 versions to the 9.8 version directly.

According to the ZD1100, it shows version 9.9.0.0 build 212. Is that the firmware version?

Also, the R700 shows sw version 5.1.2.0.373. Is that the firmware? These are not labelled very clearly for me to understand.

Also, how do I find this AP CLI to log in to? and finally, you say to execute certain commands if the AP is not getting connected. Well, I can connect to the R700 and ZD1100 by regular logging in, but I don't know what to do next. Remember, I am very new to this and have never set up the R700 or the ZD1100 before. Also note that this unit is the third ZD1100. The first two were bricked as far as I can tell. I cannot access of the first two units. Luckily, I had a third that seems to work. I bought all three units at a bankruptcy/estate sale and they are as they are. I just need guidance to set it up. Please help me?

I forgot to answer your last question, and that was how many AP700 devices will I be connecting. The answer is one for now possibly a second later. That is all I need.

Hi @uplinkal,

Thank you for the update and for sharing the screenshots.

As the AP is running on 5.1.2 version it will not be able to connect to the ZD running on 9.9 version.

We will have to use the upgrade option and change the AP version to 100.X.

As you have GUI access to the AP please click on the upgrade option and then upload the image file of r700 from the downloaded software.

The AP version can be downloaded from the link below link. This will be in a Zip file so extract the contents and use the R700_100.0.0.127.bl7 file to upgrade the AP. The snippet below for your reference.

Once the AP is on standalone 100.X version it should get connected with the Zone Director. If not then log into the CLI using the below method and execute the command.

To login into the AP CLI use SSH(Download Putty application from Google). Enter the IP address in the Hostname or IP address field and click on Open.

Enter the credentials and post that execute the commands "set director ip <IP of the ZD>" followed by "reboot".
