Downgrade ZD 3050 from 10.1 to 9.13?

We recently upgraded from 9.12 to 9.13. Then from 9.13, to 10.1, of course failing to realize that the firmware of our APs wouldn't be able to upgrade. Now, APs we're plugging back in are throwing the event "Failed to upgrade [AP NAME] image from 9.12.2.0.219 to 10.1.1.0.42." My question is now - how do I get back down to 9.13? Thank you!

Hi James,

When you upgrade a ZD a copy of the previous version configuration should have been saved. You should be able to downgrade back to the exact same version of code you were running before the last upgrade, ie 9.13. If you need to go back any further (9.12.2) the ZD will get factory defaulted when downgraded and you would have to restore a configuration backup taken before upgrade.

When you upload the previous version of code it will let you know if you can gracefully downgrade (ie previous configuration exists) or if the ZD will be factory defaulted, with the option to cancel the upgrade.

Albert, thanks so much for the reply! I do have the previous version configuration file. Should I just use the image file for 9.13 (zd3k_9.13.3.0.164.ap_9.13.3.0.164) that I had downloaded previously in the Upgrade page (https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/admin10/admin_upgrade.jsp)? Where in the web UI would I apply the old configuration?

Do you know the exact build you upgraded to 10.1.1.0.42?

Typically only the first 2 digits (major/minor) need to match. The third digit is the Maintenance Release which indicates bug fixes. The higher the third digit the best.

9.13.3.0.164 would be the best version of 9.13 to use.

It is possible that if you were running an older version of 9.13 then graceful upgrade might fail. But I would start with 9.13.3.0.164 as the best version. If the ZD responds with only the option to factory default after uploading the image - you can cancel and try the older version of 9.13. Hopefully this will not happen.

To downgrade the ZD go to Administer::Upgrade, Software Upgrade, choose file and browse to the copy of the firmware. Once selected it should do a verification (version eligibility and hardware compatibility), and give you the option to upgrade (all good) or factory default and downgrade (not good - cancel)

Always check the release notes for upgrade path. I checked and 9.13.0 is the oldest version that can be upgraded to 10.1.1 .... Downgrade also needs to follow this path, you should not ever downgrade 10.1.1 to 9.12 as it is not in the path.

Crossed with this question and my answer below - Basically - NO
The ZD requires a specific version of AP code that is included in the ZD firmware and automatically updated to all AP's when the ZD is updated.

The AP's should be downgraded to the version embedded in the 9.13.3 code. AP's are not restricted in upgrade/downgrade versions. This is automatic but you should plan for some service outage as the AP's reboot with the new/old version.

APs will upgrade/downgrade to the version running on the ZD they join.

I want to thank you guys for your help. Yesterday I was able to roll back successfully to 9.13.3.0.164 from 10.1.1. The APs that had 10.1.1 went back to 9.13.3.0.164, and the ones that had 9.12 went to 9.13.3.0.164 without issue. It was actually very simple. Including verification of APs, it took me about 10-15 minutes in total. Thanks!

We have a ZD3000 i wish to downgrade for the same purpose. I also have the same model in a separate location on the same network in standby mode. Do i need to do anythign specific to the standby model to perform the downgrade as well?

To downgrade firmware without losing configuration, you need to have a saved config backup from the version you upgraded from...If you downgrade and don't have a previous backup, you will need to reconfigure your WLANs again (like a new setup)...
