Band Balancing, as its called in 9.8 firmware, can be enabled/disabled under ZD
per-WLAN advanced configuration options. So is client load-balancing. With these
options disabled on the wireless infrastructure, would leave any band steering/ balancing to be a decision made by the client device.

I've heard that "the" way to defeat band steering (which is enabled by default) is to have different SSIDs on the 2.4Gig radios vs the 5Gig radios.

I've created 2 different WLANs that share the same SSID, assigned a WLAN to each radio + it looks like that defeated band steering.

Can anyone confirm that this works?
(reliably)

notes:

wlan public-24
ssid public
description "public 2.4Ghz"
vlan 199
ofdm-only
exit

wlan public-50
ssid public
description "public 5Ghz"
vlan 199
ofdm-only
exit

wlan-group public-24
wlan public-24
exit

wlan-group public-50
wlan public-50
exit
