RUCKUS "Standalone" vs "Solo Access Point" firmware. Also, does unleashed have better performance?

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding the RUCKUS R710 firmware options and best practices for a small deployment:

1. What is the difference between RUCKUS "Standalone" firmware and "Solo Access Point" firmware?

2. In an environment with only one or two APs, does one firmware option offer any significant advantages over the other? I noticed that the Solo AP firmware has a much newer version compared to the Standalone firmware—does this provide any key benefits?

Hi,

Answer : Standalone and Soo firmwares are same.

3. In a small setup (one or two APs), is there any real benefit to using Unleashed in terms of performance, range, or auto-channel selection? I have avoided Unleashed so far under the assumption that it might use more CPU/memory and that I might achieve better performance with Standalone or Solo AP firmware instead.

Answer :
Standalone\Solo firmware offers to manage and operate separately. However, the options on the GUI are limited compared to the controller based firmware like Unleashed.
If you want to manage more than 1 AP, Unleashed will give more control over the setup and will have some of the Advanced option to use.

So, I tried using solo 118.2.0.0.875 & 114.0.0.0.6565 and the access point started continuously rebooting. I managed to get unleashed back on and it is ok, but I wonder why I experienced this with solo and not with standalone?

maybe you just try the older solo version like 104.0.0.0 or 110.0.0.0 and see if the access point stable or still rebooted. sometimes the older hardware like r710 continously rebooted after installed the 114.0.0.0 and 118.0.0.0 not all the device, but some device. i hope this message can solve your problem.

That worked, my friend! Firmware 110 did the trick. I’ll keep an eye on how the device performs over the next few weeks.

I’m still trying to figure out if there’s a real performance advantage to running Solo over Unleashed, aside from the obvious feature differences. I’m particularly curious about things like:
Client handoff performance between APs
BeamFlex effectiveness
Auto channel selection
And whether DFS is even supported in Solo mode
I’ve always leaned toward Solo because it’s quick to configure and most of my clients only need one or two APs. Unleashed feels slower overall—just booting up takes a while.
But I’d love to get into the nitty gritty performance comparisons between the two. Struggling to find any solid info on that. If anyone has some deeper insight, I’d really appreciate it!

The R710s are performing great with the 110 Solo firmware—much better than with the standalone firmware. Big improvement!
