WIFI LANs drop with Internet?

Found this post about Ruckus Internet checks impacting the local WIFI networks. Yet I don't fully understand what's up.

What default behavior is set to stop serving WIFI networks if Internet check fails? We recent changed ISPs and have been given lemon modems crashing Internet and have just recently discovered this odd behavior.

In that previous post it was mentioned Internet + DNS servers + gateway IP checks.

When our Internet outages have been occurring the Ruckus Unleashed gateway IP + local DNS server are still online. So its just Internet check that fails.

What needs to be done so the Ruckus behaves itself so that WIFI LANs remains online? Can I disable all 3 checks?

Summary of setup

3x R710s Ruckus unleashed

WAPs on management on native vlan. WIFIs on configured on separate vlans.

Thanks. Yes I found that post yesterday and then disabled all 3 checks. Internet check disappeared from Unleashed GUI.

Then like other poster I created a firewall rule blocking Ruckus Unleashed MGT IP + 3x 710s IPs from going inbound through LAN interface on firewall. Simulating Ruckus Internet outage. I found ruckus unable to connect to Internet on management VLAN yet the WIFI networks remained functional + nodes on those different SSID vlans could still reach Internet. So resolved.

This is my only Ruckus install thus far. More familair with Cisco.

I do like Ruckus but I really find this behavior odd. A WLAN is a LAN. Kinda of like if a catalyst switch detected it had no internet connection it would physically disable all switch ports? WIFI does a lot more than just Internet...why sabotage the entire WLAN / SSID just cause of loss of Internet. Its used to connect local devices to local resources. Needs to remain totally functional without Internet.

Hi Taylor,

Understood. Internet check is unique to Unleashed (and the M510 LTE/4G AP).

The other Ruckus controller platforms don't have the same default functionality and WLANs will continue to operate even in the case of internet/DNS/gateway failure, as you'd expect in an enterprise environment.

Thanks for the replies, and the excellent info about Disable internet check via the CLI !

I wanted to note that we have received conflicting info from ruckus support on this, if you see my forum post back from may 2021 ( here: https://community.ruckuswireless.com/t5/Unleashed/SSID-goes-Off-if-internet-down-Unleashed/td-p/25222) a ruckus official (moderator) replied that this is NOT the intended behavior (this being- ssid/wlan goes OFF if internet or the defGW is down).

So perhaps the ruckus official was wrong? (or perhaps i did a poor job of explaining the scenario in my post?) I will be testing the CLI based disable internet-check.

(however if this does infact fix this issue, then i feel it should be changed to the DEFAULT , as well as exposed as an option in the web GUI, where the user can enable this. although im not sure why one would want this enabled , except for clients to re-request DHCP once the wlan is turned back on, once internet is restored?)

I confirmed that with product team directly and they confirmed it is not expected behavior.

Did you open a case with support, as advised by me in old thread? If yes, please pass on the case details and I will get it checked internally.

Hmm - well I spoke too soon it seems. Not resolved.

My simulated firewall / Internet block is apparently not the same as true Internet down.

The WIFI is still impacted with full loss of Internet. For example a client's RDP session to a local server. If I ping servers or vlans default gateway from our 3 SSIDs I get intermittent packet loss, high latency, or it will drop for 30-60 seconds then resume to being intermittent.

I don't understand. Internet check is off for all 3. DNS check is still on and Gateway check is still on. These are always online even if with Internet out. Gateway is an IP of a L3 Switch management vlan gateway. DNS IPs are two local domain controller / DNS servers.

Although there online it seems I need to disable these two checks as well?

I've taken a look at CLI guide + googled a bit but not seeing where to disable them?

Could you point me to documentation where I can disable?

When Internet is online Ruckus WIFI is rock solid. Very strange behavior.

Recently having more issues with our ISP and this situation is still happening. It's crazy and driving me crazy. What is causing Unleased to just stop all 3x WIFI networks just because Internet is down. There should be absolutely zero Internet requirement for Unleashed to continue functioning. It's a wireless LAN. Local.

Currently firmware: 200.13.6.1.319

Unleashed deployment not under contract. Cannot open support case.

But this should be easy fix IMO over forum. Please.

Something is built into unleashed to cause this. What to disable?

Not a single device on the LAN is going offline with Internet. Not switches / power injectors. Local DHCP online (even though Ruckus static), local DNS online. Firewall online. Simply Spectrum Internet offline and then so does Unleashed LANs.

Could you let us know the below details:
1. How many APs are you having?
2. When you wifi drops, is the client gets disconnects from the Wifi?
3. Also are you able to see the SSID from clients (Mobile\Laptop) at the time of issue?
4. If you are not able to see the SSID, can you login to the AP CLI and enter the below command to see if the SSIDs are broadcasting or not?
Master :
ap-mode
get wlanlist

Member AP:
get wlanlist

The state for SSID WLAN should say as "UP" if it is broadcasting.

You can also try the latest firmware available 200.14.6.1.199

3x R710s. 3 separate buildings in close proximity. AP per building. Coverage overlaps. 3 Separate switches each building connecting each AP . 2 APs power via Ruckus injector. 1 powered via POE switch.

3 SSIDS / VLANS. Only 1 Guest SSID broadcasts beacon.

Unleashed MGT IP + 3 APs IP on native vlan 1 management network.

Yes I do believe the SSIDs remain online / UP but all local traffic flow stops. I typically RDP my laptop into a management server via WIFI. During onsite visits from ISP bringing down DOCSIS cable modem the RDP will just drop. I'll then try laptop disconnect / re-connect hidden SSID will not successfully renew via DHCP servers reservation as no local traffic flowing.

Except the gateway IP which is the vlan 1 interface of L3 switch is always up and accessible when this happens. So its not the gateway check? The DNS servers are Microsoft domain controllers. Also online when happens. So its not DNS check? I've already disabled Internet check via CLI. He also mentioned power cycle. I’m not seeing reboot.

Nothing is happening to switchports trunks that uplink APs.

Center building with master AP + Internet

Master AP --> L3 Switch --> Firewall --> Spectrum Router --> Spectrum Cable Modem

L3 Switch has /24 vlans. Dedicated /29 uplink L3 switch to Firewall.

Microsoft DNS unencrypted internal queries. External queries forwards to firewall. Firewall queries google DNS servers via TLS 853.

Spectrum unplugging power / coax from cable modem and WIFI down. All other equipment online. Not a single network interface goes down of client’s equipment except for Spectrum’s cable modem to Spectrum router WAN interface. This has no relevance to client’s firewall or L3 switch or master AP. Or the other 2 building APs.

Updated to 200.14.6.1.199 but don’t believe this is a bug…it’s a strange design decision of unleashed.

I have not tried ssh into master AP when this happens as pre-occupied with Spectrum onsite. I can find an opportunity to cut Internet when onsite for "get wlanlist" but I’m convinced it’s a weird unleashed “check” issue.
