How do I set 160Mhz Channelization on R610 Unleashed?

I'd like to use 160Mhz Channelization for my R610 Unleashed in order to get the maximum throughput with my new Intel 9260 Wireless Adapter.

I can't find a setting for this an it only uses 80MHz channels at the moment.

Hi Michael,

It appears the Unleashed R610 does not support 160MHz channel width functionality: https://docs.ruckuswireless.com/unleashed/200.5/c-R610.html

The Maximum Data Rate on the 5GHz radio is 1300Mbps, which equates to a modulation scheme of 256-QAM 5/6, 80Mhz channel, Short Guard Interval, with a 3x3:3 adaptor.

However I would comment that the chances of you being able to effectively use 160MHz channels in a real-world environment are slim. There would need to be almost no other 5GHz Wi-Fi networks in use in your location for it to be worthwhile implementing.

The access point hardware does support 160MHz channels so your could try the Ruckus 'standalone' firmware to see if this allows you to use 160MHz. Unfortunately I've not been able to confirm this.

Hi Darrel,

the specs of the R610 https://ruckus-www.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/datasheets/ds-ruckus-r610.pdf actually do state that is has a channelization of: 20, 40, 80, 160/80+80 MHz

So it should be capable of supporting this. Question is how?

I recall when I dug through the AP command line interface, I did see command line options to set channelization to 160. Might be worth a try but it’s not a very good idea given how few contiguous 160MHz channels there are...

Yeah, so if the Unleashed CLI is similar to other OS (vSZ) CLI commands, something like the following might let you adjust the channel width beyond what the unleashed GUI allows.

set cwmode : set cwmode {0|2|3|4|5|6} (0=20Mhz, 2=40MHz 3=10MHz 4=80 5=160 6=80_80MHz)
-- Set 11N channel width mode

so "set cwmode wifi1 <5 or 6>"

I tried via the CLI but the command to set the channelization is different and only allows up to 80 MHz:

„radio 5 channelization number 80“ works but „radio channelization number 160“ results in an error.

Looks like you can’t use other values than the GUI.

Any further ideas?

It could be a limitation of Unleashed code then. As here is the output from me attempting to change the channel widts of an R610 in our vSZ platform.

vsz# remote ap-cli xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx "get cwmode wifi1"

vsz# remote ap-cli xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx "set cwmode wifi1"
parameter error

So it seems to support it in the vSZ platform. But do note I did not try to change it as this is an AP in production service clients that I cannot test with. Next time I'm in my office and can hunt down an R610, I'll actually test and see what the output it.

I wonder if the R610 is able to use 2 spatial stream with 64-QAM 5/6 and 160 MHz which would also result in 1300Mbps. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11ac

Is it a limitation of the Unleashed Product?

I had the same problem with my R720 Unleashed. There was no option for 160 MHz, and although setting cwmode to 5 or 6 worked it quickly changed back to 4. I have installed the Solo firmware and that allows me to set 160 MHz and it is working great. I would really prefer Unleased firmware so if you guys could fix it that would be appreciated.

Also got an r720 and extremely bummed there is no 160mhz, which is the reason i got it over the cheaper r710. Are there plans to implement it?

160Mhz channalization is introduced in 200.9 released last week. You can turn on the individual Wi-Fi 6 AP or add ap-group of the Wi-Fi 6 APs under "Access Points". See below screenshot.

Hmmmm... I do not think it applies to all APs, my AP R750 does not have 160mhz still, even though it is on 200.9

S P Choo, do you mean you don't see the 160MHz option from the pulldown menu OR you don't think it is applied to the AP even though you had chosen 160MHz? You can verify this by going Access Points -> R750 -> System Overview Info, then go down to the Radio section, you should see the Channelization item showing 160 under the 5GHz column.
