Hello,
I’m using one Ruckus ICX 7150-C12P switch together with five R650 access points to set up my network. All R650s are powered via the PoE+ ports of the switch. In each AP’s management interface, I’ve set the power mode to force 802.3at.

During configuration, I discovered that the ICX 7150’s total PoE+ power output is insufficient (according to the official specs, the total PoE budget of the ICX 7150 is 124W). Specifically, when all five APs are connected to the switch, one AP will fail to power on (its network port LED remains off).

After checking the official documentation, I found that each R650 requires approximately 21.59W of PoE+ power. I then manually set the ICX 7150’s PoE power allocation to manual mode and configured each of the five ports to 24000 (24W). After doing so, all five APs could be detected in the web management interface and showed as being powered via 802.3at.

However, the web management interface became extremely slow and unresponsive—most pages fail to load or time out. If I power off one of the APs, everything returns to normal.

Is there a possible solution for this issue? Thank you.

Switch firmware: RUCKUS ICX FastIron 08.0.95s (GA) Software Release
AP firmware: R650_200.18.7.101.242.bl7

The Web management interface refers to the Unleashed platform. SSH access is only used for the ICX switch. After successfully connecting, I manually configured PoE power supply on LAN ports 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 of the switch (each set to 24000), and the setup was successful. After configuration, all five APs showed LED indicators. However, the network service did not operate as expected — although there was no disconnection, accessing the Unleashed Web management platform became extremely slow or even unresponsive. Additionally, the speed test function within the AP group could not be used and displayed an “error.” Could it be that the ICX7150 cannot support five R650 APs due to insufficient PoE power supply?

Hi Muziyulin,

Thank you for posting your query.

My understanding of the issue is that when all five R650 access points are powered by the ICX 7150-C12P, the switch’s 124 W PoE budget becomes overloaded, causing high CPU usage and making the Unleashed web interface slow or unresponsive. The issue resolves when one AP is powered off, confirming the switch is operating at its power limit.

Please try one of the following options:

Reduce the per-port PoE allocation

Set AP Power Mode to Auto to allow dynamic power negotiation.

Power one AP via an external PoE injector.

Consider upgrading to a higher PoE-capacity switch.

Thanks
Mayank

Thank you for your reply. You’re absolutely right. My current solution is to power one AP via an external PoE injector. I’d like to ask if there’s any way to control the AP to disable unnecessary processes or features in order to reduce power consumption.

Hi Muziyulin,

You can manually restrict the maximum power that the AP can draw.

Example (limit port to 15W instead of 30W):

interface ethernet 1/1/5
inline power power-limit 15000

(Value is in milliwatts → 15000 = 15W)

This can force the AP to negotiate as 802.3af, reducing its power mode and automatically disabling high-draw features.

Note: Please feel free to mark the post as ACCEPTED SOLUTIONS if its addressed your query.

Thanks

Mayank

Hi Muziyulin

Thank you for reaching us

To add to the discussion: The 7150-C12P switch can support a maximum of 8 Class 3 and 4 Class 4 APs simultaneously. If your APs negotiate as Class 4, you may need to either limit their power draw or use an external PoE injector to ensure stable operation.

Below is a snippet from the datasheet for reference:

Link: https://webresources.commscope.com/download/assets/Ruckus+ICX+7150+Switch+Data+Sheet/b013d23e3bd511f0a7293e67199c332c

You can also verify the PoE budget using command "show poe"

Thank you

Yes, but when set to 802.3af, the AP’s performance becomes very poor, and opening the Unleashed web page is very slow. So I manually set the five LAN ports on the ICX7150 switch to 24000 (24W). The official documentation states that the R650’s 802.3at power consumption is 21.59W, but some documents mention 30W.
