Nice update. I suspect they are experiencing the same thing that we are. The noise dies down once the device if fully booted.
Then the noise returns after any kind of load (traffic).
Like you I just want to be sure this isn't going to affect the longevity of the switch.

Purchased a gray market ICX 8200-C08ZP and it appears to be brand new in matching serial box. Device is flawless and works exactly as it should. But I noticed it is very loud with electronic noise / coil whine. The more traffic its processing the louder it is.

Was this a known issue and that is why these switches are being sold? I attempted to see if there was a way to pay for out-of-warranty service through support but I didn't get a lot of help.

Just trying to find out if this is a known issue, I only heard of this being a problem with the R770 APs, this switch being very new seems like I just received a lemon I hope. The ICX 7150-C12Ps that I am working to replace are dead silent.

Hi Knownguy

Thank you for reaching us

This is an 8200 fanless model, so it typically operates quietly. Based on the chassis output, the switch temperature appears to be within normal range.

If you're still noticing any unusual noise, it could potentially be due to a loose screw or a hardware-related issue.

Could you please check if there are any warnings or errors in the output of "show logging" ?

Thank you

Yeah hence my surprise when it was still noisy without a fan.
I did not hear any initial noise when moving the device around but I'm sure anything is possible and there could be a screw that is not entirely screwed down maybe. But I have never in my history heard this type of noise from a switch.

Logging shows nothing except SSH connection logs, no errors to speak of.

I have also noticed that this switch takes nearly 6 minutes to boot where as the same switch takes less than 2 minutes to boot.
I have went through the recovery process and it still lags and times out during this step in the boot process:

Starting kernel ...

[ 4.630127] armada8k-pcie 800a0000.pcie: phy link never came up
[ 4.630138] armada8k-pcie 800a0000.pcie: Link not up after reconfiguration
[ 4.871912] No board info available!
[ 5.182128] marvell-nfc 805b0000.nand: Timeout waiting for RB signal
[ 5.258981] marvell-nfc 805b0000.nand: could not identify the nand chip
[ 5.364639] tpm tpm0: A TPM error (256) occurred continue selftest
[ 6.194947] Read soc-rev-info node failed
[ 6.243428] xenon-sdhci 805c0000.sdhci: AP SDHC is running in slow mode
[ 6.323457] Read soc-rev-info node failed

I even went as far as to do the golden image recovery followed by a complete reset and upgrade to the latest suggested version. Still noisy and very slow to boot.

This section of file system / partition checks seems to possibly point to bad NAND, the free inodes section again differs from another similar switch:

Please let me know if there is more that I can do to get this figured out.

I was able to perform a securewipe and that fixed up the issues with NAND, still a loud buzzing noise. I have two of the 8200-C08ZP models and they both buzz. The 8200-C08PF model is actually silent.

Sounds like I may have one of the earlier batches or something that have issues or, they just all do this and I am too sensitive to the sound.

I saw this post and wanted to throw in my own observations.

I have four of these and they all have noise. I was updating their firmware on my desk to 10.0.10f_cd1 and I found it to be super annoying enough to unplug them the moment I was done. I did find it weird but since they all do it I thought it was just standard for this model.
I had them all deployed at a site for a time and as far as I know they all work perfectly otherwise.

A bit of an update; I talked to a Ruckus employee and they said they have a C08ZP on their desk, but it only makes the buzzing noise on bootup.

I wonder if this there's one factory batch of C08ZP's that has this issue after boot and we just were unlucky to get devices from that batch.

The noise is a bit annoying but my real concern is if this represents shoddy components and therefore a shortened device lifespan.

Sorry to interrupt here, but coil whine cannot be fixed by software updates. It usually comes from a faulty or low-quality power supply component.

Nice update. I suspect they are experiencing the same thing that we are. The noise dies down once the device if fully booted.
Then the noise returns after any kind of load (traffic).
Like you I just want to be sure this isn't going to affect the longevity of the switch.

Yes I understand this, we just want to confirm if this is happening with a small subset of devices or if this is systemic to all 8200-C08ZP switches. I do not have the same issue on the 8200-C08PF. I don't want to continue rolling these out if its a known issue. Not that I would be getting an RMA as I do not have an official contract on these. I am a fan of the 7000 series so I thought I would try and help Ruckus out by investigating.
