SmartZone 100 (SZ104) - Discovering Multiple APs

Planning to deploy 100+ APs in to a SZ cluster (2x SZ104). What's the best way to enable AP discovery by the WLC?

WLC IP is in 172.x.x.x/24 range (MGT). Do the APs have to be in the same range as the WLC to be discovered? If so, how can we enable 172.x.x.x range in all the APs? (Is the only option to use DHCP Option 43?)

All the APs are connected to the Switches and are under VLAN 100 (Untagged - 192.x.x.x DATA range). Will this be an issue for the discovery process, because those are in different subnets?

Also we're using One-port Group Mode (Control+Data traffic). We don't mind using the 192.x.x.x range to manage the WLC as well, because there's no requirement for a separate MGT and DATA planes.

Hi Rajiv,

APs and SmartZone do not need to be on the same IP subnet. You will need to configure each SZ in the cluster with a NAT IP, so it can push it's configuration to the APs and they know where to contact it.

The key thing to remember is that the APs discover the SZ (using the methods mentioned above) - the SZ does not discover the APs.

We configured DHCP Op3 but, but still unable to connect the APs to the Controller. We deployed the DHCP server in one of our ICX Switches. Debugging doesn't show any results. We FR-ed the APs also.

Also, I was wondering whether we can change IP of WLC to AP range (192.168.0.0), so it's easier to discover right? But will we be able to change the IP of the WLC to a different subnet later? If so how will this affect the APs?

I don't think changing the IP address of your controller temporarily is a viable solution.

If the APs are not discovering your controller then it could be something else on your network. Can the APs ping the controller IP? Have you rebooted the controller?

If you still don't have any success then I'd recommend raising a ticket with Ruckus support.

With the above config I shaded, APs are not getting DHCP leases. Since APs are on the default subnet of 192.168.0.0/24 and the WLC is on 192.168.40.0/24, we used DHCP Op43 on an ICX Switch to lease IPs to the APs.

@rajivw I think you have configured wrong DHCP option. From the config on ICX it is set to "option 3" which is for ZD, not for SZ.

Please set it to option 6. You can generate the hex from below web site.

Hi @syamantak_omer I'm trying to configure Op43 but I'm unable to see the command. ICX7450, Router image, 8.0.60

I read the DHCP Op43 is supported from 8.0.30mb onwards.

Later on added DHCP configs (sorry, I don't have a copy of that config now). Just created a IP DHCP-Server pool, added network address of ve 40 above with subnet mask, excluded few addresses and deployed.

Option 43 is supported from version 08.0.61 as you are running 08.0.60 the options command does not work. I attach screenshot from release notes of 08.0.61 for your reference, below.

I would recommend you to upgrade the switch to any of 08.0.90 or 08.0.90k (Recommend firmware as in Support Portal) if there are no known issues that you may be aware.

Upgraded to 8.0.61. Op43 is there now. However DHCP server is not getting deployed. DHCP Server is deployed in Core SW of the network. APs are patched to other Access Floor Switches. Core - Access communication is working. Wireless VLAN is created on both Core & Access layers. VE interface with gateway IP is also configured on Core.

You mean untag the LAG? (Each Fibre Core SW has a port in a LAG to Access Switches eg: 1/1/1 & 2/1/1 in LAG 2 to Floor 2). These LAGs carry multiple VLANs, so I tagged them.

I will try out the enable command for DHCP tomorrow and let you know. I didn't see that in the guide. Also will share the Access SW config tomorrow if this doesn't work. Thanks in advance.

Tags are solid, in the above configuration you shared dhcp is not enabled, running "ip dhcp-server enable" would enable core switch to handover DHCP to APs (VLAN 40).

It worked! Thank you so much 🙂

APs are now in the WLC. However, there's a 30-second disconnection continuously occurring. They come online and go offline. Also I'm unable to see the APs broadcasting the SSIDs (I've turned on the radios).

Any idea why?

Please to ssh into one of the AP try to ping the gateway of the AP and the controller, to see if there is any connectivity issues.

Regarding APs not broadcasting please ssh into AP and run "show wlanlist", you will able to see if the SSIDs are being broadcasted or not.
