Announcement: Ruckus SmartCell Insight (SCI) 2.0 GA Release is now Available

Ruckus SmartCell Insight (SCI) 2.0 GA Release is now available.

SCI 2.0 provides many new features and functions that improve Analytics and Reporting functions.
A 90-day trial license provides access to full features, and SCI 2.0 works with both ZD 9.7+ and SZ 2.5+.

Migration instructions and Support assistance are available to SCI 1.x customers.

SCI 2.0 incorporates our new licensing mechanism, and SCI 1.x will go End of Sale by end of August.

FYI - the documentation for SCI 2.0 is incomplete. At the moment there is no way to assign an IP address to a fresh install of SCI. Normally after installing any ova you are directed to login at the command line of the vm, run some type of setup routine to set network parameters like IP address, and then off to a web browser to do the rest of the work. This is exactly how vSZ is installed.

There are no such directions in the install guide for SCI 2.0. At the command line I cannot login at all. This VM lives in my sever vlan (along with my 45 other windows/linux servers) and there is no a DHCP scope setup for this vlan. Servers never get IP addresses assigned via DHCP, they always get static addresses. I opened a case with support and they are looking into it

The Ruckus vSZ ova file comes bundled with VMWare tools installed
SCI 2.0 ova does not. So besides the inability to set the IP address of SCI 2, VMWare tools would need to be installed via the command line. It appears that SCI 2 needs a little more work before it can be installed

Yes, the assumption for SCI 2.0 is that the VMware environment/tools are fully available.

Hi David,

Yes, you are right. Right now, SCI 2.0 doesn't allow for manual IP address assignment right now and it expects an IP assignment from a DHCP.

However, we will be having a release very soon that will allow you to manually assign IP addresses and the documentation will be updated accordingly.

When you say fully available, do you mean you will be including the tools in an upcoming release? In other words, when the ova file is pulled into VMWare, the tools will have already been installed just like the vSZ ova file?

Under VMWare, ever VM need to have VMWare Tools installed

When I bring up a new Windows VM, I install VMWare tools which is easy to do. VMWare provides a drop down menu with one of the choices being Install VMWare tools.

With many prepacked ova files that are just imported directly into VMWare, whomever provides the ova has already installed VMWare tools. For example, the Ruckus Virtual Smartzone controller ova already has VMWare tools installed in it. I am assuming that vSZ and SCI are using some linux distro like CentOS. For vSZ The VMWare tools were installed into CentOS and then the ova file was made.

Having VMWare tools installed in every VM is VMWare's best practice. I have never seen a VM without VMWare tools installed. If you click the link I provided it takes you to a knowledgebase article about VMWare tools. If you scroll down there is a section that talks about VMWare Tools being provided in three formats. One of those formats is Open VM Tools. I am nearly certain this is what Ruckus pre-installs for your Virtual Smartzone (vSZ). When I installed the vSZ ova file and brought up our Ruckus controllers, VMWare Tools was already installed, I did not have to install them.

Yes, VMWare tools needs to be installed in every VM running under VMWare
