Unable to Add Member APs to Existing Master in Gateway Mode – “Configure.Me” Broadcast Persists

Hello Ruckus Support,

I recently moved into a previously owned Lennar home equipped with Ruckus Unleashed APs. I was able to successfully configure a Master AP in Gateway mode and it is functioning correctly with client connectivity and Internet access.

However, I am unable to add Member APs to the Unleashed network. Despite factory resetting the Member APs and following standard onboarding procedures, they do not join the Master, and instead broadcast the Configure.Me-xxxxx SSID.

Steps I’ve Taken:

Factory reset Member APs using the hardware reset button (10+ seconds).
Disconnected the Master AP and connected only one Member AP to the PoE switch to rule out interference.
Reconnected Master AP and attempted to bring Member AP online.
Confirmed all APs are on the same Layer 2 subnet and connected through the same ICX switch.
Verified the firmware version on the Master is 200.x.
Attempted to SSH into the Member AP to set the director IP (set director ip <master-ip>), but credentials super/sp-admin admin/sp-admin did not work.
No “Join Existing Network” option appears in the setup wizard on the Member AP’s web UI.
Observed similar behavior to this issue posted here however it didn't have resolution.

Request:

Please assist in:

Verifying how I can SSH into the Member AP (or reset the credentials if needed).
Determining if there’s a known issue causing the Member AP to not auto-discover or join the Master in Gateway mode.
Clarifying if specific DHCP or VLAN configurations are needed when in Gateway mode.
Advising if Discovery Agent needs to be enabled manually and how to proceed without CLI access.
Are there any settings need to be changes on AT&T modem to avoid any sluggish internet access

After configuring my Master AP in Gateway mode with IP 10.106.0.1 and DHCP enabled (10.106.0.2 – 10.106.0.254), I attempted to add a Member AP but it continues to broadcast Configure.Me-xxxxx and does not join the existing Unleashed network.

Upon reviewing IP assignments:

The Master AP is using the 10.106.x.x subnet.
The Member AP, after reset, is receiving an IP in a completely different subnet (10.154.231.159)
This confirms that the Member AP is not on the same local subnet as the Master AP, and therefore is unable to auto-discover or join the Unleashed cluster.

Actions Taken:

Factory reset of the Member AP (10+ sec reset button).
Wired the Member AP to the same ICX switch as the Master AP.
Attempted DHCP auto-join — no IP assigned from Master (confirmed via dashboard).
Attempted manual SSH using ssh super@192.168.0.1 with default sp-admin — login failed.
Attempted to access setup wizard via browser at http://192.168.0.1 — unreachable or no “Join Existing Network” option appeared.
Member AP continues to pull an IP from a different subnet (10.154.x.x) and never joins cluster.

Please advise on how to:

Force the Member AP to receive DHCP from the Master AP subnet
Reset the CLI password if it was overwritten or fails after factory reset
Confirm whether subnet mapping or firmware-related issues (e.g., br14 or br4.4094 IP conflicts) may be preventing successful discovery

Based on the case description, I understand that you're currently unable to add Member APs to the existing Master Access Point.

Could you please confirm whether this setup was functioning previously?

If you're attempting to add a new AP, please ensure that its Unleashed firmware version matches the version running on the existing Master AP.

Additionally, kindly confirm which specific port on the switch the AP is connected to. It should be plugged into one of the 12 ports as shown in the below screenshot

Please note that manual IP configuration is not required, as the AP should obtain an IP address via DHCP.

First time when i configured ((without Gateway mode) Member APs are joined in cluster after reset however internet was sluggish and after went through forum i reconfigured with Gateway mode and thats when i encountered Member APs are not joining even after Factory reset.

If you're attempting to add a new AP, please ensure that its Unleashed firmware version matches the version running on the existing Master AP.

I have tried all 3 APs as Master AP separately and they have latest Unleashed firmware version per the dashboard. However not able to do SSH when i connected them through Configure-*** due to incorrect credentials (super/ sp-admin , admin/sp-admin, admin) so can't confirm now through SSH.

Thank you for the response.

We suggest you to perform a factory reset on the access point and establish a new Wi-Fi network/SSID.

I’ve followed the same Knowledge Base self-help article and have attempted the configuration nearly 10 times, but the member APs still fail to join the cluster.

I would appreciate it if you could review my earlier messages and attached screenshots to help identify the root cause, rather than providing general suggestions.. I am not able to do SSH to any AP due to the credentials. i don't see the the option to attach screenshot to share my setup.At_T dashboardAT&T ModemMaster APMaster APMember AP is blinking

From the response, I understand that you are unable to connect Member Access points to the Master AP even after performing reset.

We would request you to perform a full reset of the Unleashed network to restore access to the Unleashed management interface or to reconfigure the system from scratch, especially if access credentials have been lost or are no longer working.

I performed a full factory reset on all Ruckus Unleashed APs and attempted to configure the network in Gateway mode. However, in this mode, the Member APs do not join the Master AP automatically.

When I reconfigured the Master AP without Gateway mode (i.e., Bridge mode), the Member APs joined automatically and functioned as expected. However, in Bridge mode, I’ve observed intermittent issues with internet performance – including sluggish speeds and occasional failures to load mobile apps (particularly when switching between Wi-Fi and web browser or between APs).

Can you please clarify:

What is the recommended mode (Gateway vs. Bridge) for a typical residential setup where the Master AP is connected to a switch, and the switch uplinks to an AT&T modem/router?
How can I ensure seamless internet access across all devices, especially when transitioning between APs or between applications?
Is there any additional configuration needed to improve performance in Bridge mode (e.g., DHCP settings, DNS, NAT behavior)?

Any guidance to ensure reliable AP clustering and smooth device connectivity would be appreciated.

I’m not sure if my previous response was fully reviewed. To clarify:
In Bridge mode, the Unleashed setup works, and I’m able to successfully add all Member APs. However, I’ve noticed the internet feels sluggish, and when I connect devices to the network, the Member APs’ LED indicators don’t turn orange—which suggests that the devices are not connecting to the nearest AP, but rather defaulting to the Master AP.

Could you please advise:

How can I ensure that devices connect to the nearest AP and no sluggish internet?
Are there specific configuration settings required to enable or optimize this handoff?

I understand that you've configured the network in Bridge mode and were able to add member Access Points, but the performance isn't meeting expectations.

For Lennar home users, it's not necessary to manually set the network to Bridge or Gateway mode, as the system is designed to work efficiently with the default settings provided during setup.

Could you please confirm if you have followed the steps in the previous article?

I followed the exact steps mentioned in the previous article so didn't select any specific mode(seems default is Bridge mode). Even though member APs are joined the cluster but devices are not connecitng to nearest APs as i clearly sees network strength single is far even through i am near to member AP and intenet is sluggish. Please advise the next steps?

Thank you for the response.

Based on your description, it appears the Ruckus Unleashed network is operating in default Bridge Mode, and although the member APs have successfully joined the cluster, client devices are not roaming to the nearest AP as expected. This could result from configuration issues.

Could you please check if the settings on your Unleashed system are configured as follows:

Start by enabling Fast Roaming (802.11r/k/v). To do this, go to Wi-Fi Networks, click on your SSID, and select Edit. Under the Advanced Options tab, ensure the following features are enabled:

802.11r (Fast BSS Transition)
802.11k (Neighbor Reports)
802.11v (BSS Transition Management)

Next, enable Band Steering. While still editing the SSID, scroll to the Band Selection section and make sure Band Steering is turned on. This helps direct devices to the faster 5 GHz band when possible.

Then, adjust the Transmit Power settings for each Access Point. Go to Access Points, select each AP, and click Edit. Under both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio sections, set:

2.4 GHz to Low or Medium
5 GHz to Medium or Auto

Please make sure these settings are applied to all Access Points, including the Master and any Member APs.
