Hi!

Thanks for your reply: I just got the reply from my customer that indeed the WLAN was isolating clients, so problem solved! Apple TV and iPad can see each other.
New problem: the video stream to the iPad is not good, the video is not comming through, the screen remains black (Apple TV has video, iPad does not). Is there any solution for that?

Thanks again

Hi,

we have problems connecting iPad with Apple TV via airplay when the Apple TV is connected on the same access point as the iPad.
The iPad can't "see" the apple TV, but is able to see other apple TV's connected to other APs.

Firmware is 9.5 on ZD1112, and APs are ZF7372

Any help is appreciated
Problem solved!

Thanks for your fast response!

This is what we've done:

No wireless client isolation
Click the plus sign by Advanced Options at the bottom of your WLAN, in these settings be sure that you do
- not have Rate Limiting configured
- don't drop multicast packets from associated clients-
- and do check the box to enable 802.1d

Thank you very much
If the iPad can see the AppleTVs, but performance is the issue, you need to troubleshoot the client connection to it's AP. The AP System Info (first icon to
the right of the AP on Monitor/Access Points page of ZD WebUI), is a text file
that will display RF interference affecting the AP under Athstats radio 0/1, and
connected client statistics above, will display that iPad's RSSI and packet error
rate, which impact performance.

The problem is that the Ipad(airplay) CANNOT see the appletv on a consistent basis. The performance is not the issue. It works fine most the time when they are able to see each other and is are working. But I have to continually reset, or power off and on the Appletv to get the Ipad(airplay) to see the appletv. My teachers have used their Iphones on occasions and it doesn't seem to have this consistent issue.

Ah, a more meaty problem to troubleshoot. If you can upgrade to 9.7 firmware,
Bonjour is given higher priority as a well known protocol, where we could only
disable directed multicast to allow free flow of packets between wired/wireless
in earlier releases.

Second, is network analysis, how big is the VLAN/subnet in use? Smaller bcast
domains are recommended. Too many small packets (bcast/mcast/IPv6) can
affect AP performance. Do you segment your client WLAN traffic to individual
VLANs to help reduce the broadcast domain?

That iPhones typically see AppleTVs ok but you have problems with iPads does
point to a client side difference somewhat. Will iPads see AppleTVs on the same
AP ok all the time? How many AppleTVs are there total? IPhones and iPads
may not see as many as the other too, if you have very many.

In general, Jos' configuration comments above should be helpful. If you're having
worse trouble getting iPads working with the AppleTVs, please open a case with
your VAR or Ruckus.

Well, right now we are using 9.5.1.0 build 50 and when I checked for updates, I got the prompt, "There is no update at this time".

No, there is no Vlan in use

Will iPads see AppleTVs on the same AP ok all the time? Yes, most the time

How many AppleTVs are there total? There are 15 on our campus

Our AP's configuration is the same Jos's "fix", but we are still having issues.

Ok, I may open a case.

As of the latest versions of both the IOS and the apple TV, Apple is using a more direct route. Disconnect the Apple TV from the network (wireless and wired) completely, enable bluetooth on the ipad, then do an airplay.

With the latest revisions, the bluetooth is used for discovery, then the apple TV and the iDevice connect directly to one another on channels 149/153. I have yet to play with it much, but my guess is it should work very well as long as your wireless is not using 149/153.

Bob

I have yet to mess with it much but the couple tests I did, it seemed to work quite well. This also allows you to NOT use the bonjour gateway AND stops airplay from flooding your network. All in all a good deal except they stole two popular channels.

One last note, if you go into "configure" and "system", take a look at the country code options. If you change it to "optimize for performance" you will gain a lot of channels to play with.

Bob

It shouldn't be strictly necessary to add more voodoo after updating to 9.7 or newer, which it looks like Brian did. I've heard that disabling directed-multicast might help in some circumstances, but IMO Brian should see if the update alone has resolved the issue.

(Oh yeah, be careful about enabling the extra sets of channels in ZD if you have a lot of BYOD devices. While all the Apple devices seem to support all the DFS channels, I've been shocked at how many consumer electronics devices don't have good DFS support)
