I am in the UK and I have a ZoneFlex 7363 bought from the US. It is set to US and cannot be changed.

What are the issues with connecting to ZoneDirectors? Will it never connect to a UK ZoneDirector? Can the AP firmware be changed to allow the country setting to be changed? Can a US ZoneDirector be used in the UK. etc.

Hi Timothy Carrington

As per FCC regulation, any RF device bought in the US, must be used in the US only. For this reason US country code is locked to the device.

As long as US AP is connecting to UK ZD it will_NOT_connect however you can set the country code on ZD to US and then US AP would connect to it.

I am not in the UK so not well versed with RF regulation for UK hence would request to contact a local Ruckus sales engineer who can advice you on the options you have and whether it is wise to change UK ZD to US or not.

Firmware upgrades will not fix this

Hope this helps.

PS: I am saying from experience as i had the honor to buy Ruckus AP online and it turned out to be US AP device which i was not able to connect to ZD on India country code hence using it as standalone with minimum transmit power.

no I hadn't:

get boarddata shows

Fixed Ctry Code: yes

and

rkscli: get countrycode
Country is US
OK

and

rkscli: set countrycode UK
parameter error
set countrycode

rkscli: set countrycode uk
parameter error
set countrycode

so I don't think I'll have any luck with that.

I sold this 7363 and it got returned as not working with a UK ZoneDirector. This appears to be normal functionality for a US-locked AP.

The weird thing is that I sold the other 3 of these (I bought 4 brand new from USA last March 2014) in July 2014 and the buyer says they are working fine on his UK ZoneDirector.

I would like to re-list it but I don't want to annoy another customer. Would be nice to know the difference between these two UK ZoneDirectors so I can sell it to someone whose ZD will accept it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, Im in the exact same situation now with a US AP and a UK ZD. Did you manage to change the AP to a UK one via software update or firmware at all?

you have two ways of fixing it:

1) set the county code on ZD to US and connect this US locked AP. this should work. After this, Remember you making your gear work as per US regulation and NOT UK.
2) work with TAC as i heard that they have some "internal only" commands to unlock this AP to work with any ZD. this is upto their discretion

PS: US locked AP's are supposed to be used in US only..

from what I remember, I had to refund the first customer, and I was just as honest as I could be with the second advert. It sold and AFAIK worked fine for that customer, though I don't remember if it was with a ZD or standalone. I didn't muck about with firmware etc.

Hi Resmus,

First of all, a Ruckus AP comes in two different country wise product code,

1- Country specific where country code is fixed and cannot be changed. Product name will look like below. Here AP model is H510 and its product country code is US which is fixed and cannot be changed.

xxx-H510-UK00 xxxxxxxxxxxx

2- APs which can be used World Wide and their country code can be changed. For example, refer below. Here it is a H510 model and product country code is WW (World Wide) so you can change the country code depending upon which country you are going to use the AP.

xxx-H510-WW00 xxxxxxxxxxxx

To check if your AP is fixed to a country code or not, run below command and look for "Fixed Ctry Code:" in the output. If it says "no" means AP is for WW use and if it is set to "yes" then AP can only be used as per it's product country code.

get boarddata

Example output:

name: T310
Just seen this - I have ordered Ruckus gear from the USA and I live overseas. Already ordered ZD1200, ICX switch (plus access points planned soon to be ordered). If I buy my APs in USA too will everything work or will the equipment know I live overseas?? I never envisaged that this would be an issue!!

Hi Peter,

AP do not knows if you are in US or overseas, it is more of a configuration thing which controls the use of a country code specific AP with a different country configuration on ZD or other Ruckus controller.

For example, lets assume I have purchased an AP with US product code (Keep in mind that I could have purchased an AP with WW product code as well) and I have a zone director, then below are things things I can or can't.

Can:
- If ZD is configured with its country code settings as USA and then I connect my US product code AP with ZD, it will work.

I can't:
- If ZD is configured with country code other than US (lets assume India) and I try connecting my US product code AP, then AP will not work with ZD as AP's country code cannot be changed from US to India (Country code mismatch).

So when you order the APs, it is must to check if you need a country specific AP or AP with WW code.

Use cases:

1- I am based in India and I know I will never move to other country or configure my APs to other country code. In this case I should buy AP with India country code (IN).

2- I am based in US but I may move to Canada or to a different country where I may need to use my Ruckus APs with a controller. In this case I should buy the AP with WW product code.

Regards,
Syamantak Omer

Many thanks. The easiest place to buy is online from US sellers. This means everything should be US product coded. Based on what you are saying this should all work together. As long as the AP and ZD aren't checking my physical location via my IP then I should be ok? Right? I may relocate to the US in future but plans are not set.

I assume the switch is unaffected by product code?

Also, if I am not physically in the US will I have difficulty activating my 5 free licenses for my ZD1200, or even purchasing new licenses?

Kind regards!

Hi Peter W,

Don't worry if something is not working due to country code, please feel free to open a case with Ruckus Support. They would be able to assist you on this.

Hope it helps!!!

Regards,
Abilash PR.
